Breed information is not provided by this shelter. MAS hopes eliminating breed labels will increase the number of animals adopted by eliminating 'breed discrimination.' When entering information on this website the 'Breed:' field is required. All breed information I enter is an educated guess solely based on a photo of the dog.

I try to keep this information as vague as possible, usually entering by group instead of a super specific breed. Why? Almost all of the dogs at MAS are mixed breeds. Being super specific is not going to accurately represent their personality and it would be virtually impossible to do. There are 20+ specific types in the terrier breed group alone, ranging from the tiny Norfolk Terrier to the larger Staffordshire Bull Terrier (which is often lazily labeled a pit bull). Pit bull is actually the name given to types of dogs having certain similar features. See super complicated.

My advice? If you fall in love with a face, go to the shelter and visit with the dog. Ask the staff and volunteers questions. See if their personalities mesh with you and your lifestyle. If the picture you've fallen in love with doesn't fit? Ask if there is a dog whose personality does. Mixed dogs are so much more than the breed they kind of look like.

Remember that you furbaby's adoption fee includes spay/neuter, microchip, vaccines, heartworm test, collar, leash, and a customized ID tag.
