Suspect patient is experiencing syncope (fainting). This may be due to an underlying heart condition or given the occurrence while pulling on leash, may be due to pressure on the carotid sinus in the neck. Based on descriptions of the events, does not sound like patient is having seizures, but unable to completely rule out at this time. Recommend patient receive cardiac work up, including auscultation and possibly an ECG holter. Patient has displayed aggressive behaviors during both veterinary exams. Recommend patient be promoted urgently- both medically and behaviorally- as no further veterinary assessment is possible at the shelter. (1/26) Vet Check - Dog presented for vet check for unexplained falling while walking - per lifesaving staff, dog suddenly stumbled and fell over while walking. Brought dog into dog intake room for exam with Dr. Dog appeared BAR with no obvious instability issues. When Dr. approached and kneeled down to examine him, he suddenly lunged/snapped snarling at her with no warning. She was not comfortable to continue the exam. (1/26) Initial Exam - Apparently Healthy Behavior Observation: (1/28) Vet Staff - Patient is initially friendly for handling but whale eyes when attempting to examine. Patient did not tolerate being muzzled and fought to get out. After, patient became fixated on vet and growled and repeatedly attempted to lunge. (1/26) Vet Staff- Fearful, QAR (1/26) Lifesaving - Presented socially in front of kennel with tail nub wagging. Accepted treats gently. Easily leashed. Began walked and he started to wobble and fell over. Brought him into dog intake for vet check. Vet began to touch his back end to examine him and he growled and snapped at her. Immediately turned around and buried head into handler. He then turned to face vet and continued to low growl. A vet tech went to throw something in trash can and he low growled at her too. Wagging tail for handler and accepted pets while in room with vet and vet tech. Walked with some pulling on leash. Appears housetrained. Growled at dog walking by, but after dog passed by he play bowed and barked/cried. Sniffed surroundings and approached handler for pets. Allowed for pets all over and back legs "dancing" for butt scratches. Would push his head and half his body through handlers legs when petting. Knows sit, paw, and down. Played with tennis ball and accepted trade. Approached handler for pets with tennis ball in mouth, and low growled when handler went to pets sides. Handler backed off. He dropped the tennis ball and reapproached handler and solicited attention. Allowed for pets with wagging tail. Stopped petting and he pushed head into handlers lap for more pets. When going to pet him he low growled again. Interacted was ended and he walked well on leash with no issues back into kennels. Easily returned to kennel. (1/24) Owner- Belonged to a friend. Calm, hyperactive, good with other dogs, good with strangers, walks well on leash, barks all the time. Lived with 2 other dogs in home. Crate trained. Crated for a few hours at a time.
