About zorro: Intake Info: A caller called about Zorro running loose in the Lake Ida dog park. The caller stated that Zorro was playing with small and large dogs; Zorro appeared to have good social skills and play bow. Our ACO observed that Zorro is skittish and shy with people, but he allowed the ACO to pick him up with a wrapped towel. A witness called ACC and stated she observed a man leave Zorro there and said his girlfriend no longer wanted Zorro. ACC scanned Zorro for a microchip but did not find one.
Medical: Zorro is heartworm-negative, vaccinated, and neutered. Zorro was on FAS (Fear, Anxiety, and Stress) medications for some time with some improvements; he was greeted at the kennel door, vocal, lots of play bowling, tail wagging, and some growling. Our clinic staff gave him some toys, and Zorro started playing with toys but was still reactive.
Behavior Observed: Zorro was nervous as soon as he saw our B&E team staff. The staff lowered his body and gave Zorro treats through the kennel bars, and he would eat them. The staff then stood up, and Zorro began growling and jumping around in the kennel. The staff opened the door and walked into Zorro?s kennel, and immediately, Zorro started muzzle-punching our staff?s leg. He waited for Zorro to stop, as muzzle punching can signify defensive behavior. Zorro stopped after several more muzzle punches; he got the slip leash on Zorro and went to the vet exam area. Zorro would snatch the treats from the staff while growling. Our B&E staff saw the kennel techs walking by and asked if they could try giving Zorro treats through the gate; Zorro took treats from both techs softly. They then went on a brief walk where the staff got Zorro to sniff his hands, and the staff could pet Zorro?s butt/back area. For restraining purposes, our B&E staff recommend using the less is more technique and having females handle Zorro; Zorro loosened up more when he saw our female tech, and after a brief intro with another female tech, Zorro walked up to her and sniffed her all over.
Staff Notes: A kennel staff have walked and played with Zorro multiple times. He stated Zorro is playful with him but would try to escape from his kennel when possible. The staff also noticed Zorro is reactive to some people when he's inside his kennel, but Zorro does better when brought outside. Zorro allows the staff to pet, leash, and unleash him without offensive behaviors. Zorro could be jumpy when being leashed. Zorro is not reactive to other dogs while walking to and from his kennel but would bark at some dogs walking past his kennel while inside his kennel. Zorro is treat motivated with our staff.
Request to Rescues: A young boy, Zorro, came to ACC from an unfortunate situation. Zorro needs someone who can be patient, provide guidance, and be persistent in training. Zorro will also benefit from working with a behaviorist to build confidence, learn proper manners, and build trust with people.
