The behaviors described today reflect the dog's responses in an Animal Care Center environment and during assessment. A dog's behavior in an Animal Care Center may differ significantly from how they behave in a home. Stress, confinement, and unfamiliar surroundings can cause dogs to act out'or suppress behaviors that may emerge later. A dog's behavior may change based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences.'
He walked with a light pull on the leash to the catch pen. The runner easily clasped the collar around his neck. He entered the play yard with a soft body and a neutral tail. He was approached by a male shepherd. He exchanged a tense greeting with him. He had a high stiff tail and hackles raised. A female shepherd approached him, and he exchanged a soft greeting with her. A female poodle mix approached him, and they exchanged a soft greeting. He approached handlers often in the yard to solicit affection. A male kelpie mix entered the yard and he approached him. He exchanged a tense greeting with a high stiff tail and hackles raised. He was walked out of the play yard. In the catch pen, he started growling with hackles raised at the male kelpie mix through the play yard fence. He is tense with male dogs but is softer and relaxed around female dogs. Due to his tense behavior around male dogs, he will be designated as female dogs only required. After he is neutered, he can be reassessed to see if he will be better with male dogs. BEHAVIORALLY OK FOR PUBLIC ADOPTION, FEMALE DOGS ONLY (REQ), MEDIUM ENERGY
