'The behaviors described today reflect the dog's responses in an Animal Care Center environment and during assessment. A
dog's behavior in an Animal Care Center may differ significantly from how they behave in a home. Stress, confinement, and
unfamiliar surroundings can cause dogs to act out or suppress behaviors that may emerge later. A dog's behavior may change
based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences.'
Reyes was lying down at the back of the kennel with a tense body and a timid demeanor. The runner coaxed him to the front
of the kennel, where he sniffed the runner's hand. He flinched and dodged the leash several times before the runner was able
to gently toss the leash over his head. He slowly exited the kennel, and immediately flattened his body to the ground. He
required coaxing and gentle pressure on the leash to walk to the yard, and was easy to collar when the runner moved slowly.
In the catch pen, his body was tense, his eyes were wide, his ears were back, and his tail was tucked. He entered the yard, but
tried to avoid the other dogs. He barked, bared his teeth, and snapped at the other dogs when they approached him. He
scurried to the far side of the yard, where he hid under the table with a tense body and a tucked tail. He continued to behave
defensively whenever the other dogs approached him. Reyes is defensive with the other dogs, has a low energy level, and
does not have a playstyle at this time.

Reyes was already in the side yard when the handler decided to begin the handling assessment. He was initially avoidant of
the handler, but slowly approached when the handler knelt near him. He leaned against the handler, and allowed the handler
to pet his head, neck, and back. He was slightly uncomfortable throughout the assessment, but allowed the handler to pet his
whole body with no issues. He rolled onto his back with a tucked tail while licking his lips anxiously, so the handler stopped
petting him and gave him some space for a few minutes. He laid in the middle of the yard, and did not approach the handler.
However, when the handler approached him again, he leaned his head against the handler's arm while allowing the handler
to continue petting him.

Don't adopt just because you feel sorry for reyes!
Adoption should be a well thought out decision, it's a lifetime commitment.
