'The behaviors described today reflect the dog's responses in an Animal Care Center environment and during assessment. A
dog's behavior in an Animal Care Center may differ significantly from how they behave in a home. Stress, confinement, and
unfamiliar surroundings can cause dogs to act out or suppress behaviors that may emerge later. A dog's behavior may change
based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences.'
Carter was fearful and avoidant of the runner. The divider door was closed, and the runner walked to the other side of the
kennel. Carter was at the back of the kennel with a hunched body, ears back, concerned eyes, and a tucked tail. The runner
stepped into the kennel and gently tossed the leash over his head. Carter required coaxing and gentle pressure on the leash to
walk, but pulled away, yelped, and bit the leash. The runner was able to coax him into walking again, but was unable to
place any pressure on the leash without causing Carter to panic and flail. He was wary and uncomfortable while being
collared, but the runner moved slowly and attached the collar without issue. In the catch pen, his body was tense, his eyes
were wide, and his tail was tucked. He entered the yard, and immediately ran to the corner of the yard where he sat with a
tense body and a fearful demeanor. One of the dogs was eventually able to coax him out of the corner, and he engaged in
play with calm dogs. Carter is tolerant of the other dogs, has a medium energy level, and prefers a gentle-dainty playstyle.

Carter was the last dog in the yard when the handler decided to begin the handling assessment. He was fearful of the handler,
and ran to the corner of the yard to hide. His body was tense, his eyes were wide, his ears were back, and his tail was tucked.
The handler moved slowly, and was able to pet his whole body with no issues. He remained tense and uncomfortable
throughout the assessment, but was easy to handle. When the assessment was over, he allowed the handler to walk him out of
the yard, but began to panic and flail when he felt pressure on the leash. The handler kept him close to her side as they
walked, and he returned to the kennel with some coaxing.
