About bully: Bully ACCT-A-215207 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to length of stay and lack of space for incoming dogs. Bully must have confirmed placement with a RESCUE PARTNER or ADOPTER by THURSDAY, MAY 1ST at 10AM. Should Bully?s medical or behavioral status change, his urgency and timeline for placement may also change.
Bully came to the shelter on March 16th, after his longtime owner was no longer able to keep him due to housing restrictions. Bully is a playful, energetic boy who loves his people and thrives on attention, exercise, and affection. While he can be a bit mouthy and snatchy with treats at times, he is very food-motivated and loves to please. Bully has shown he is affectionate and handler-focused during his time at the shelter, though he has shown some instances of reactivity towards other dogs. Please bring all members of the household along with any resident dogs along for a meet. He would thrive in an active, adult-only home that can continue his training and offer him the structure he craves. Due to his length of stay, Bully is urgently seeking placement with a rescue partner or adopter. Meet Bully at ACCT Philly any day from 10 am to 6 pm.

BEHAVIOR:
Per volunteer 4/26: Awesome.
Per staff 4/26: During the dog meet, Bully was very focused on the other dog. When doing the meet through a fence, he was pacing and barking. Once there was no barrier, he alternated between pulling towards the other dog and focusing on the handler. He was a bit stiff at times and resumed barking at the other dog. He shook off and we began walking and throughout the walk he pulled towards the other dog. When we stopped, he was able to have a loose leash and alternated looking at the handler and the other dog. He then suddenly ran towards the other dog, pulling towards her and barking. We tried to let him sniff her hind end but she was avoidant and kept turning towards him, but at the end we were able to have him get some sniffs in. We ended the meet when he attempted to mount her.
Per staff 4/26: I handled Bully for a dog meet. Bully was focused a lot on the pet corrector in my hand and did jump up snapped near it. i never used the corrector but would verbally correct him every time he thought about jumping on me or snapping near me. every time there was leash pressure while he slightly moved forward, he would assume i was pulling (I'm guessing) and would look back with wide dilated eyes. this continued every time he was reactive towards the dog and came back to me and fixated on my hands.
Per staff 4/24: Bites leash.
Per volunteer 4/23: Walks well, loves to explore.
Per volunteer 4/21: Mostly sat, loves kisses, so sweet.
Per volunteer 4/20: Sweet boy, affectionate.
Per staff 4/18: Nice, calm.
Per volunteer 4/18:
KENNEL PRESENTATION: When I approached the kennel, Bully was standing at the front. I stuck the leash in for him to sniff and was able to easily slip it over his head. Bully did a little tumble out of the kennel but he has short legs.
LEASH SKILLS: Pulls moderately on leash. Gets fixated on other dogs.
HANDLING: Bully seemed very fixed on other dogs while walking of the kennel. He was quite vocal towards the dogs and pulling towards kennels. Outside we passed another dog and he didn?t seem to notice. In the play yard, Bully seemed handler focused. Bully jumped up on the handler to solicit attention. Bully allows pets with a mid level tail. Bully would wag his tail at baby talk but mostly it remained mid level, no wag. Bully was panting (might have been due to temperature) and had red eyes. Bully seems very food motivated. He is very snatchy with treats and is not great at catching them. Bully can be a bit mouthy in general, he gives some licks and nibbles. Bully did some sniffing but mostly stayed near the handler. Bully returned to the kennel and was a bit hesitant to jump up but did with a bit of coaxing.
PLAY & TOY: Played fetch. Initially did not take possession but started too. Released willing when returned to handler with you. Later took possession of a toy, brought over to handler and chewed briefly.
COLOR LEVEL & ANY RECOMMENDATIONS: Blue
Per staff 4/17: Pulls on leash, nice, gentle.
Per volunteer 4/16: Pulled on leash but walked well.
Per staff 4/15, playgroup: Pushy, forward but steerable.
Per volunteer 4/15: Did a fence meeting with Moo. Bully was fixated, barking, lunging.
Per staff 4/14: Extremely treat motivated, mild-mannered on leash and knows "sit".
Per volunteer 4/13: Good on leash.
Per staff 4/9: Sweet and friendly, but can get a little mouthy and excitable.
Walk sheet note (undated): Great on leash - little pulling to the direction he wants to go. Seems housetrained. Loves pets and to cuddle once he's used to you. Reactive in kennels but a sweetheart when out. Curious of other dogs. Leashed great/went back with no problems. Might be snatchy with treats.
Summary of owner surrender notes: The owner noted that Bully had been owned for 1 year. He lived with adults, was fully crate trained, and had a high energy level with a passion for exercise and play. The owner shared that Bully pulled a little on the leash and was walked twice per day for 30?45 minutes each time. Bully ate dry food twice a day and enjoyed doggie treats. At night, Bully slept in a crate/kennel or on a dog bed or blanket on the floor.
The owner reported that Bully responded to commands such as sit, knew his name, no, off, stay, and wait. Bully enjoyed rope toys, squeaky toys, balls, bones or other durable chew toys, and stuffed animals or plush toys. Favorite activities included playing tug-of-war, going for walks, and visiting the dog park.
The only behavior concern listed was that he would sometimes have accidents in the house. Bully was described as super friendly and loving toward both strangers and children. The owner was unsure how Bully reacted toward other dogs, cats, or wildlife, as Bully had not been around them. The owner shared that Bully?s ideal home would be ?a family who could provide a loving environment for Bully?. Their favorite thing about him was that ?Bully doesn?t show any aggression at all loves to be around people and going for walks.?
MEDICAL:
On 4/11, Bully was diagnosed with an upper respiratory infection (URI) or "doggy cold" and started on doxycycline. He tested negative for pneumovirus. On 4/25, he was noted to have a complicated URI, so he was prescribed enrofloxacin and his course of doxycycline was extended. He is scheduled to be on these medications until 5/4.
On 4/9, Bully was neutered. He was estimated to be about 1 year old minimal tartar on his canine teeth. His tail short and kinked, suspected to be congenital bully conformation. His ears were cropped but clean and he had slight upper airway stertor. There was an area of superficial crusting on his abdomen which was scrubbed with chlorhexidine. He was prescribed 3 days of Douxo S3 Pyo Mousse for the irritated skin.
During his intake exam on 4/8, Bully appeared to be in good health other than being a little underweight. His eyes were pink, his ears were clean, and his nose was moist. They were unable to look at his teeth as he thought the staff member?s hand was food. He had a vet check placed for concerns regarding his tail.
Due to being significantly overcapacity with dogs and cats and higher than usual intake, extensions are unlikely to be granted. If you are interested in an animal please contact ACCT Philly immediately.
