TO BE DESTROYED 08/30/16**

A volunteer writes... * ONE YEAR OLD ** Handsome Skips is barely out of puppyhood, full of energy, curious to learn and to become more. Skips arrived at the ACC of NYC as a stray. Skips impressed the policemen who found him tied in a park. This one year Staffie mix was friendly and playful with the Officers, and sat for treats for ACC Staff. He did well when the shelter performed his behavioral SAFER, but the day in and day out caging is beginning to take it's toll on this young energetic pup. It is time for Skips to get out of the shelter environment and decompress. The ACC is not going to wait, they have listed Skips to be destroyed. Skips is only a year old and will die unless an Experienced foster or adopter steps up. He also would be best in a home with no small children. Please share, advocate, and pledge to find the person willing to help this young pup. Sociable Skips cannot die just because he is young and unable to understand why he has to be caged all the time. Skips needs exercise and patience, not death!

08/17/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION - EXPNOCHILD

Skips was brought into the shelter as a stray; past behaviors in a home are unknown. Behavior during intake: Skips was friendly and allowed all handling. During SAFER Skips came into the assessment room wiggly and playful he had a loose body posture when interacting with the assessor; he allowed all handling items to be conducted with a moderate level of excitement. Skips was easily aroused during the tag interaction; he continuously jumped on the assessor, he had a tense body posture and he began to low growl but quickly de-escalates. Skips appears to be sociable, though due to some concerns with arousal, the behavior department feels Skips would benefit best from an experienced adopter who can provide an adult only home. Force-free, reward based training is advised. Look: 1. Dog's eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears relaxed. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor's cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 3 Dog is easily aroused, and began to low growl during play. He repeatedly jumps on the assessor, Dog; tail is wagging, mouth open, body a bit tense. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 1: 2. Dog gently places his open mouth over the Assessor's hand without applying pressure. Toy 1: No interest. Playgroup:Skips greeted a male at the gate with a high tail. When he was let into the pen, he stood side by side with the other male, holding the same posture he had during the initial greeted. When the male walks away, he follows, attempting to status seek with body bumps, and placing his muzzle near his face. When the other male interacts with the female in the group Skips places himself between them, pushing him away. Skips low growls when the male mounted him. 8/28/16: Today Skips displayed extremely concerning arousal and re-direction behavior towards a volunteer while on a walk. The incident began with him climbing the leash, biting and tugging at it just as they left the property. This escalated quickly to him jumping up, mouthing at her stomach and side- leaving several scratches on her skin. When a staff arrived to assist, Skips maintained his focus on the volunteer and began biting at her pants and leg. Due to this level of arousal, the Behavior Department feels that Skips is deteriorating rapidly and placement should be sought as soon as possible for staff safety and his welfare.

Skips was brought in as a stray so his past behavior around other dogs is unknown. When off leash at the Care Center, Skips engages in play with a female dog. He may becoming sexually motivated and persist after handler interruptions. Around other male dogs, Skips status seeks, with body bumps and placing his muzzle near his face. When the other male interacts with the female in the group Skips places himself between them, pushing him away. Skips low growls when the male mounted him. He continually solicits play with a female dog, ignoring the other dog?s body language that they do not wish to engage in play. He briefly listens to handler interruptions before returning to solicit play. The Behavior Department recommends that Skips be placed in a home with a female dog that is comfortable with his energy level. 8/15: Skips enters the pen with his hackles raised but quickly loosens his posture and becomes bouncy and wiggly. He solicits play with leap-overs and bows. Skips becomes slightly sexually motivated and is slow to respond to interruption by the handlers. 8/16: Skips greeted a male at the gate with a high tail. When he was let into the pen, he stood side by side with the other male, holding the same posture he had during the initial greeted.
