A volunteer writes: She pretends to be shy but shes really a little diva. Truer words were never spoke. Little miss Fern may at first glance appear to be a beautiful wallflower, but this petite princess is really a rose in bloom. Of course I was drawn to Fern right away. That hazelnut coat, those vanilla feet, those chocolate brown eyes! If there?s a more delicious brindled beauty out there, well, then I have not yet had the pleasure. But when you are as smart, as pretty, and as popular as Fern, admirers are nothing new. And my first offer of a walk was met with hesitation and one uncertain sniff. Oh Fern, she is the sweetest! a staff member says as she cruises by with another pup. She pretends to be shy but shes really a little diva. And now I have got Ferns number. We cruise right outside for a romp in the yard where I discover the key to Ferns heart. Well two keys. The first would be treats. Savory, sweet, kibble, or bones, our diva loves them all. She takes each one from my hand then eagerly sits for more, a happy grin moving across her face. Second are toys. At just the sight of my frisbee our brindled beauty springs to life. She waits for my mark then moves into a running start, artfully catching the disc in midair. When she returns to me I seize my chance to rub her ears and kiss her face and Fern rewards me with a SLURP. Fern may take a moment to show her true colors but trust me, she is a rainbow ready to shine. So grab your umbrella, your snacks, and your toys, and come meet our sweet girl today. Fern is waiting in adoptions at Manhattans ACC.
I came in the shelter as a STRAY on 03/29/2017 from NY 10457, owner surrender reason stated was OWN ARREST. I came in with Group/Litter #K17092419.

Dog takes toy away, keeps a firm hold. Her body is between you and the toy. No growling or stiffness. ,br>Summary: Fern displayed a high level of energy during her assessment, jumping up at the assessor high and hard between assessment items and during tag. Between assessment items she also displayed nervous behavior, displacement scratching. She allowed all handling. DOG DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: Fern has not yet appeared completely comfortable while interacting with other dogs in the care center, though over time has become more tolerant of their approach.
The behavior department feels Fern would be most comfortable in a single pet residence at this time. Future follow up should be conducted on a slow, one on one basis to respectful dogs. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 3/29/17 During her initial medical exam, Fern was tense. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Fern so we cannot be certain of hrt behavior in a home environment. However, she is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. During her assessment, she repeatedly jumped up on the assessor high and hard, at times in a playful manner and at other times in a manner that appeared uncomfortable and distance increasing.
We recommend long lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide and seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm. IN SHELTER OBSERVATION: 4/11/17: Fern barks consistently in her kennel, at times barking herself hoarse. We are not certain of the motivation for the barking, but Ferns long stay appears to be causing challenges for her and we recommend that she move into a stable home environment quickly.
