A volunteer writes: Chocolate marble cake never looked so good! Sweet Shakka is 8 years young and full of fun, and watching his gorgeous smile emerge from its somber slumber was the highlight of my day. Hes quiet and well behaved in his den and enthusiastic and seemingly very house trained on leash, but theres only one way to guarantee a glimpse of his happiest grin set him free in a pen, toss in a couple of balls and he will take care of the rest! Shakka loves tennis balls like Tom Hanks loved Wilson, and once they are in play he never loses sight of his little round BFFs. When I call him over to the bench, he comes halfway, then realizes I might be conspiring to take the ball back, and instead retires to a corner where he can quietly entertain himself by kicking it back and forth, picking it up again for a game of keep away or just standing beside his prized possession, looking like the handsome, hunky jock he is. Shakka already knows how to sit on command and catch treats mid air, he is not fussed over petting while he?s communing with his toys, and hes happy to let me join in the action with a few kicks and throws of my own. So long as I don?t take a ball that?s right in front of him before tossing another to chase, we can keep the game going for hours! Described by his former family as friendly, relaxed and respectful toward everyone he meets, Shakka would make a great addition to your home team. Recruit him at our Manhattan Care Center today!

05/11/17 14:52 Basic Information: Shakka is an 8 year old unneutered male APBT that has no past or current medical issues that the owner is aware of. Owner has had Shakka for 8 years but had to surrender due to personal problems.
Socialization: According to the owner, around strangers Shakka is friendly and loves giving kisses and snuggling. He has been around children ages 1 to 14 and was always relaxed and respectful around them. Owner did not have any other animals in the home but did state that whenever he would walk Shakka outside, Shakka would bark at other dogs. Shakka does not have a bite history.
Behavior: When there are fireworks or thunderstorms, Shakka will try to hide. He is not bothered when someone takes away his food, treats or toys, being pushed off furniture, being given a bath, having his coat brushed, being held/restrained, or when unfamiliar people would approach the home or yard. Owner has never tried to trim his nails so behavior is unknown.
For a New Family to Know: Shakka is described as friendly, affectionate, playful and excitable. He has a high activity level and likes to play with balls. Owner kept mostly Shakka indoors and is house trained. In the home, he was fed both wet and dry food brand Beneful. When he was left alone in the home, he was always well behaved. Shakka knows the cues sit, come and paw. Owner has never tried to crate train him so behavior is unknown. For exercise, Shakka was taken on brisk walks on the leash and he would go jogging with the owner. When on the leash, he tends to pull lightly. Owner was able to walk Shakka off leash and stated that he would wander a little at first but come right back when his name was called.
Behavior during intake: Shakka was loose and wiggly and jumped on the counselor during intake. Counselor was able to scan for a mc, collar and take a picture without any issues. He kept jumping on the counselors lap, snuggling and giving kisses throughout intake.
