Hello, my name is Dakota. My animal id is #15539. I am a desexed male white dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 06-Dec-2017.

Dakota is at risk for behavioral reasons. Due to bite history and displayed tendency to resource guard we are seeking placement only with a New Hope partner who can provide an experienced, adult only home for Dakota. Medically, we have no concerns for Dakota, who presents as a healthy dog.

Upon intake Dakota was nervous and tense at first. after a while he begin to wag his tail and allowed handling. He scanned negative for a microchip.

Date of Intake: 12/6/2017

Spay/Neuter Status: Neutered

Basic Information:: Dakota is a 1 1/2 years old altered male medium mix breed. He was given to owners from East Coast Adoption which is a website. He appears healthy and has no health concerns. Owner surrenders due to increasing behavior in the home.

Previously lived with:: Two adults and no children

How is this dog around strangers?: Owner stated Dakota is friendly and outgoing towards strangers and visitors that comes to the home.

How is this dog around children?: Dakota behavior is unknown towards children.

How is this dog around other dogs?: Owner stated Dakota is friendly and playful with other dogs he sees outdoors.

How is this dog around cats?: Owner stated Dakota is tolerant and respectful with cats he sees outdoors.

Recommendations comments::Place with a New Hope partner: Due to all noted concerns displayed in a home environment, the behavior department recommends Dakota placed with a New Hope placement partner who is able to provide an experienced adult only foster home. A period of decompression is recommended to allow Dakota to acclimate comfortably to her new environment; force free, reward based training only is advised when introducing Dakota to new and unfamiliar situations. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended for guidance to safely manage/modify any behavior Dakota presents with outside of the care centers.
