A MAS volunteer who spent time with me said I had a lot of pent-up energy. I used up a lot of it by wagging my tail, but still, it wasn't enough to calm me down as I pulled against the leash. Although I was hard to control at first, I liked being petted and liked having the volunteer's attention. That caused me to calm down a lot. I'm a good dog that deserves a good home outside of the kennels.

MAS hopes eliminating breed labels will increase the number of animals adopted by eliminating 'breed discrimination.' When entering information on this website the 'Breed:' field is required. All breed information I enter is an educated guess solely based on a photo of the dog.
I try to keep this information as vague as possible, usually entering by group instead of a super specific breed. Why? Almost all of the dogs at MAS are mixed breeds. Being super specific is not going to accurately represent their personality and it would be virtually impossible to do. There are 20+ specific types in the terrier breed group alone, ranging from the tiny Norfolk Terrier to the larger Staffordshire Bull Terrier (which is often lazily labeled a pit bull). Pit bull is actually the name given to types of dogs having certain similar features. See super complicated.
My advice? If you fall in love with a face, go to the shelter and visit with the dog. Ask the staff and volunteers questions. See if their personalities mesh with you and your lifestyle. If the picture you've fallen in love with doesn't fit? Ask if there is a dog whose personality does. Mixed dogs are so much more than the breed they kind of look like.
Remember that you furbaby's adoption fee includes spay/neuter, microchip, vaccines, heartworm test, collar, leash, and a customized ID tag.
