Bean ACCT-A-227626 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to medical concerns. Bean must have confirmed placement with a RESCUE PARTNER by FRIDAY, AUGUST 8TH at 10AM. Should Bean's medical or behavioral status change, her urgency and timeline for placement may also change.

Found by police as a stray on August 2nd, Bean arrived at the shelter with a deep laceration across her lower abdomen that required immediate care at an offsite hospital. She is currently stable, eating well, and appears comfortable. However, her injury requires more specialized treatment than the shelter can provide?including possible ongoing wound management or surgical intervention?and she urgently needs a rescue to ensure proper healing.

When she first got to the hospital, Bean was fearful and reactive in her kennel and was reactive towards another dog. We believe this behavior may have been caused by pain and stress because she has since greeted people gently, accepted pets, and had a good dog meet. Bean has shown real resilience despite her circumstances, and with the right support, she has every chance to heal and thrive. Due to her medical concerns, Bean is urgently seeking placement with a rescue partner.

BEHAVIOR:
Per staff 8/5: When bringing Bean out for a dog meet she was very easy to leash and sat patiently as I made a very large loop to secure her. She was struggling to keep her cone straight and hit her cone into the back of my legs the entire walk. She kept a mid level tail and looked up at me multiple times when going outside. In the yard she allowed all over handling (didn't touch near her incision) and loved neck and forehead rubs.

Per staff 8/5: Allowed all handling.

8/4 PM Offsite Hospital Notes: She was previously noted to be cage aggressive and dog reactive, however this morning this was not noted. She was very calm and sweet when the cage was approached. She walked past two dogs, one of which was reactive towards her, which she did not react to. She readily took treats gently from multiple people and allowed pets. She did not want to go back into her cage but was able to be put back in without any reactivity or aggression noted.

8/3-4 Overnight Offsite Hospital Notes: Was very sweet and comfortable. Eating well and bandage was replaced. No concerning behavior noted overnight.

8/3 PM Offsite Hospital Notes: She appears generally comfortable on current pain management. She is reactive (growling, lunging) when you approach her cage but able to be evaluated and readily takes treats from your hand gently when out of the cage. It is also difficult to put her back into the cage.

8/3 AM Offsite Hospital Notes: BAR, nervous, growling when kennel approached.

MEDICAL:
Bean is scheduled on Carprofen and Trazodone until 8/11, Amoxicillin / Clavulanate until 8/18, and Buprenorphine and Gabapentin until further notice.

8/5 Vet Exam: Promote to rescue for needed care. Recommend sedation, clean and debride laceration as needed, tie-over bandage placement. Suspect unlikely to close wound surgically at this time but may be able to close down the road with appropriate tie over bandage management with frequent bandage changes.

8/5 Intake Exam:
Eyes - Pink and clear.
Ears - Waxy and dirty.
Nose - Clear and moist.
Mouth/Teeth/Gums - Pink moist gums, white teeth with slight yellow and tartar.
Coat & Skin - Clean.
Urogenital - Intact Female, unable to check due to wrap.
Gait/Mobility - No lameness.

8/4 Offsite Hospital Notes: Cleaned and flushed wound and removed small piece of necrotic tissue. Re-bandaged.

8/3 Offsite Hospital Notes: 10 cm long gash horizontally across caudal mammary glands, 3-4 cm in thickness with mucopurulent discharge. Most tissue is pink but some is brown/grey. On examination, Breathing well with no increased bronchovesicular sounds. Wound scrubbed, flushed, and bandaged. Recommend surgery consultation regarding laceration for further evaluation of laceration repair vs mammary resection. Grade 2/6 left sided murmur appreciated, MM are pink and slightly tacky, normal femoral pulses. Some red bumps (papules) noted on inner pelvic limbs.

8/2 Triage Exam:
Presented to triage after LEO found ROL on the highway.
P is BAR, friendly, allows all handling.
Eyes clear, ears have small amount of wax.
Nose clear.
Gums pink, tacky, teeth clean with minimal staining.
Deep laceration (3cm deep x 12-15cm wide) on abdomen perpendicular to midline. Appears to bisect mammary tissue, unable to determine if body wall/muscle is involved.
Wound is not actively bleeding, kept handling minimal to avoid causing it to bleed. ~48-72 hours old.
As wound is significant, advise transferring P to PASE for wound debridement and repair, pain management, etc.
