Banjo ACCT-A-226359 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to length of stay and lack of space for incoming dogs. Banjo must have confirmed placement with a RESCUE PARTNER or ADOPTER by FRIDAY, AUGUST 15TH at 10AM. Should Banjo?s medical or behavioral status change, his urgency and timeline for placement may also change.
Banjo is a striking pup with a calm presence and an independent streak. Found as a stray on July 20th, he?s often found taking in the world around him with soft eyes and a gentle pant. Banjo pulls strongly on leash and would likely benefit from a harness and some training. He?s more of a \"quiet companion\" than a social butterfly, preferring his own space over constant attention. Outside, he tolerates petting and handling without issue, though he doesn?t actively seek it out. He can get over excited and jumpy, but is able to be redirected with treats.
While Banjo may take a little time to fully open up, he could be a rewarding companion for someone who appreciates a dog that doesn?t need to be the center of attention. He met some other dogs at the shelter and could potentially live with another dog with slow introductions. He?s ready to find a patient, understanding home where he can continue to build trust at his own pace. Due to his length of stay, Banjo is urgently seeking placement with a rescue partner or adopter.

Per staff 8/10:I took Banjo out for a dog meet today.
When I approached his kennel he made his way to the front with a wagging tail. He was very excited to be leashed but I was able to get the leash on him. I saw his notes regarding leash biting so I brought a rope toy and offered it to him. He took it nicely and held it in his mouth when he first got off TTA then dropped it at A row. I picked it up with no issues. He does pull hard on leash but was not reactive to any of the dogs in the kennel including ones that were reactive to him.
Once we made it outside he did a face meet where he did attention bark a few times and then nipped at the other dog on the nose through the fence. I am not sure if it was in a playful manner but after he was fine with the other dog a little avoidant but did approach the dog.
He did start pulling too hard to where he was choking himself out so I had to give him a break and turn my leash into a harness. Gave him a few treats that he took very nicely and then proceeded with the meet.
Overall he did great! No issues with returning to the kennel and no leash biting during this interaction.
Per staff 7/29: Banjo was alert barking and jumping up on his kennel, whining, paws on the door and nipping near the crack of the door. I put my leash in and he continuing nipping at it, making it very hard to secure him. He was very amped up and aroused but once he took a step down I secured him. He pulled moderately to strong, pulling down the kennels alert barking with his hackles raised.
Per volunteer 7/27: Banjo is a super fun dude who likes to smell all the smells and eat all the snacks. He?s a little jumpy when he gets excited, could use some work pulling on the leash, and he responds well when motivated with treats. Banjo had a good dog meet with Wilma through the fence. He seems to know sit to an extent and didn?t seem to know any other tricks. He gets really excited when he?s handed his treats and does best with an open hand since he hasn?t quite gotten the hang of catching them when tossed. Not much interest in toys. Easy in and out of the kennel, no issues returning to his owner.
Per staff 7/24: Tolerated full exam, exuberant guy!
Per staff 7/24:
Kennel presentation: Standing at the front of the kennel. Middle tail, gentle pant, ears back. Jumping for leashing.
Leash skills: Pulled moderately, ears back, tail high.
Sociability: Aloof and independent. High tail, ears back and panting when petting outside. Tolerant being touched all Over, did not solicit social contact. Knows sit and takes treats gently.
Dog interaction: Met Wiggins thru the fence. High tail, pilo erection. Body oriented to the side. Ears back. Began to vocalize with barking at the end, and I used mild leash pressure to walk away.
Play: Chased toys and picked them up, touched him on his back while he had one in his mouth. Dropped it after a few seconds.
Return to kennel: Easy.
Color level: Blue.
Per staff 7/22: Walked by Banjo?s kennel he was pretty reactive. I stood in front of his kennel making baby talk and offering a treat but he was still very reactive jumping up growling while snapping.
Per staff 7/20: He seemed very wary of me but was ok with the handler, he would tense up and give me whale eye when I'd get close. Took treats gently.
MEDICAL:
On 7/28, Banjo was diagnosed with an upper respiratory infection (URI) or \"doggy cold\" and started on medication. He tested positive for pneumovirus, but retested negative on 8/4. He completed his course of doxycycline on 8/10.
On 7/24, Banjo received a vet exam. TThey found a few small patches of alopecia on his right flank and hind limb which appeared to be scars. There was no obvious lameness, but he did intermittently \"skip a step\" on the left hindlimb.
During his intake exam on 7/20, no concerns were noted other than a scar on his back right hip and a limp on his back right leg. His eyes, nose, and coat were clean, but he did not allow examination of his teeth or ears. He weighed 48.3 pounds and was noted to be in lean body condition.
