Xhylo is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Xhylo has not acclimated well to the shelter environment and remains highly fearful and avoidant despite best efforts to keep her comfortable. She has been easy to remove from the kennel and walks well on a loose leash, but she remains avoidant of interaction, with her tail tucked and body tense. Medically, Xhylo is underweight.

Xhylo was surrendered to the Care Centers due to her previous owner relocating and not having the ability to care for her. Her previous family described her as a social, affectionate, quiet dog who preferred contact on her own terms. She would spend most of her time lounging in her bed, her crate, or in the living room. Getting in /being in a car makes her nervous, but after a while, she will lay down and get comfortable. Her favorite foods are apples and turkey-flavored treats; her favorite toys are made of rope and hard toys she can chew on. During her stay in care, Xhyloh has been highly fearful and avoided interactions with handlers and staff. She has escalated to growling and lunging in the kennel, biting a lead on one occasion when being removed from the kennel. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and reevaluate her behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.

A volunteer writes: She \"always remembers her way home\" is one of the saddest owner surrender notes I've read in a long time. Many of us have dogs who know which corner to turn and which door belongs to them - their home. Xhylo lost all that a few weeks ago, and at 3 years old her world has been turned upside down. In her original home she was fearful of strangers, and of course that's continued at the shelter. She moves away from us at times, flinches at surprising noises, and watches everything around her quietly and alertly. Her chocolate brown eyes soften when she finds out about our peanut butter, and her former guardian describes her as a cuddle monster 💕 While we don't see her cuddle monster side she relaxes into some head scratches.
