A volunteer writes: I met Umi as she was being walked by another volunteer. Such a great pup on the leash and looking so happy and carefree, just like a puppy should be. Umi is adorable in her shiny ebony dress and she is all ears and eyes when she sees a treat and a ball. She is an excellent sitter, obeying my order in a military way. She eliminates in the street or in the yard. Could she be housetrained, or partially? Umi seems to like other dogs met through the fence or during our stroll. I heard that she has a very good time in playgroups with other pooches. Umi is a very pretty and petite young girl, quite friendly and affectionate, good with her own kind and ready to jump into your life as your forever best friend. Just like any puppy, she will need some guidance and training, time and commitment to make of her the best pet you can ever dream of. Umi is at the Manhattan Care Center.

07/21/15 15:53 Basic Info: Umi is a lab mix and she is around 8 months old. Her former owner was only able to keep her for about three weeks but she was very loving and playfull during that time. Umi is described as affectionate and smart. Social Life and Personality: Umi is still a puppy in a lot of ways. She loves to play and run around. She has limited experience with kids around the age of 8. She did well with the child. She did play some what rough. Umi has not had any experience with cats. Behavior during intake: This dog was nervous and hard body at the start of the intake. She was very responsive to treats. Once we gave her treats she allowed us to collar her and take her photo without issue.

Umi walks calmly on leash. She was calm and relaxed during handling and easily engages in play, body is loose and wiggly, mouth open. Umi ate faster, was stiff and very difficult to push out of the food bowl, but did not growl, snap or bite. She was not interested in rawhide but put body between assessor and toy, showing no growling or stiffness. Umi may require positive reinforcement behavior modification to address her possible food guarding behavior. The behavior department feels that she may do best with an experienced adopter who can follow up on this behavior. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessors cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Food 3. Dog gulps food, begins to eat faster and with bigger bites, body stiff. She does not lift head when hand is applied to cheek. Toy 2. Dog takes toy away, keeps a firm hold. Her body is between you and the toy, and she is loose and wiggly. No growling or stiffness. Rawhide: 1. No interest. When off leash with other dogs Umi is social and playful, engaging in bouncy, rough play with both males and females.
