Hello, my name is Vee. My animal id is #63325. I am a male gray dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 8 years old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 19-May-2019.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Vee is at risk for behavioral and medical reasons. Vee has remained fearful at the care center and allowed for only minimal handling. Vee would be best suited for placement with a new hope partner that can provide the necessary behavior modification. Medically, Vee was diagnosed with canine infectious respiratory disease complex which is contagious to other animals and will require in home care.

Oral Exam:front teeth clean
PLN: No enlargements noted
H/L: NSR, NMA, CRT < 2, Lungs clear, eupnic
ABD: Non painful, no masses palpated
U/G:2 testes
MSI: Ambulatory x 4, skin free of parasites, cystic nipple noted, healthy hair coat
CNS: Mentation appropriate - no signs of neurologic abnormalities

Assessment: entropion, mass (benign abdomen)

Prognosis:good

Plan: tab ou bid long term until entropion can be addressed

As per Dr 1516, gave 50 mg acepromazine at 12:40PM. Sedated with 1ml butorphanol and 0.8 ml dexdomitor at 1:50PM. Reversed with 0.8ml antisedan at 2:20PM.

Date of assessment:: 5/22/2019

Summary:: When an attempt was made to take Vee out of his kennel to preform the assessment, he was unable to be safely removed from the kennel. As soon as the leash was on his in the kennel, he began to growl, and then lunged forward, hard barking. For this reason, a handling assessment was unable to be preformed.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Vee so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Behavior Asilomar: TM - Treatable-Manageable

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children: Due to how uncomfortable Vee is currently with touch and novel stimuli, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time.

Place with a New Hope partner: Vee has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake, growling and hard barking when attempts are made to take him out of the kennel. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: When an attempt was made to take Vee out of his kennel, he became reactive as soon as the leash was placed on him. He growled and lunged forward, hard barking. He is not able to be safely removed from his kennel at the care center. He will need a very slow approach and positive reinforcement training.
