Evaluation Notes: Actively Nursing Litter - no dog/dog interaction at this time. Staff reports that dog is reactive at barrier by growling, snarling, barking, and lunging at barrier with a tense and frontal body with wide eyes and a tucked tail. She has growled, snarled and charged at staff during routine cleaning and when offering food. Upon approach she is laying with pups and low growls at me as I talk to her softly through barrier. She comes over for treats offered on ground and from hand through barrier and after finishing treats, growls and barks at me through barrier with a tense, frontal body and wide eyes making direct eye contact. After separating from pups, she continues to take treats from hand through barrier and begins growling and barking as I open kennel. She paces around in kennel as I offer leash and growls and barks at leash with same body language. I am able to lure her into leash using treats and she is easy to walk out of kennel. She displays sociability with nearby staff by allowing affection with a tense body, wide eyes and a tucked tail. She walks slowly on leash and as dogs in nearby kennels bark at her, freezes with a tense body, lowered head, pinned ears and a tucked tail. She is easy to lure into walking by crouching and patting legs. Once outside she is interested to sniff in grass and as I crouch in grass, comes over to me for continued affection where I am able to pet her chin, chest and sides with a tense body and a tucked tail. She is hyper vigilant while outside circles on end of leash with wide eyes. As I pet her again, she leans into affection with a loose body, squinted eyes and a low tail. As we walk back to building she is able to adjust and walks with a loose body. Entering kennel she displays sociability with staff by greeting and sniffing their clothing with a loose body, wide eyes and a low tail. She becomes nervous when walking past dogs in kennels and freezes in walk way as they bark at her with a tense body, wide eyes, pinned ears and a tucked tail. She is not responsive to me crouching and patting legs. She follows me as I enter her kennel where she immediately turns around to sit in my lap. She allows me to remove leash and pet her again with a tense body, wide eyes and pinned ears. She is seemingly interested in leaving kennel by attempting to dart around my legs and is easy to redirect where I am able to exit kennel. Behavior due to guarding of the litter and/or barrier reactivity influenced by environment.
