About dexter: Intake Info: Dexter is a handsome 4 year old boy who was found as a stray on the beach in Delray Beach on 4/22. He has a chip but sadly it?s not registered with any company and so no owner info can be found. Medical: Dexter is a neutered four-year-old male dog who is currently experiencing dry, flaky skin. He's bright and alert, vocal, and hyper-salivating for the meatball. He?s a sweet boy with lots of energy, but he can become overstimulated. He?s vaccinated and heartworm negative. Behaviors Observed: He had a neutral gate greeting and is steerable. He enjoyed light socialization with other dogs (male and female). However, prior to being taken to the yard, Dexter snapped at the gate when staff put his hand up to it. Another staff member approached Dexter with more intense body language and Dexter began to tap his paws on the bed and wiggle his body. Staff Notes: He?s very cuddly but doesn?t like hands near his mouth. Dislikes being muzzle wrapped and growled then snapped at staff?s hand during his vet exam. Has showed signs of FAS (fear, anxiety and stress) ? pacing, jumping, panting ? and has shown barrier reactivity to dogs as they walk past his kennel (will bare teeth and lunge) and will redirect on staff. Volunteer Notes: The most recent note from one of our experienced volunteers is that Deter is becoming more reactive in his kennel. He gets extremely stressed when he is in the catch pen, and he is having a hard time breathing. He was not steerable with any aversive tools when he was that worked up. He went after the volunteer's hands when she picked up the hose. Dexter had a ton of fun with the splash pad by the catch pends, but he did get too excited. Dexter loves water so much that he did not mind Roger was barking at him. He did really nice calming down on his walk and one-on-one time with our volunteer. Dexter is eager to come out to the yard. Super friendly. Appears housebroken. Request to Rescues: Young Dexter has an unknown history and was found roaming the beach. Now he is at the shelter and need urgent rescue due to showing barrier reactivity and redirecting on staff. Due to this, he is no longer eligible for the adoption program and we need a rescue to step up and find him a home where he can relax and feel love once again. He may benefit from some professional training to work on his reactivity. Given time, love and compassion, he can be the perfect addition to your family.
