Benson ACCT-A-248692 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to length of stay and lack of space for incoming dogs. Benson must have confirmed placement with a RESCUE PARTNER, FOSTER, or ADOPTER by THURSDAY, MAY 21ST at 10AM. Should Benson's medical or behavioral status change, his urgency and timeline for placement may also change.
Benson came into ACCT Philly on April 25th as a police intake after an officer found him on the street and was unable to locate an owner. He is a treat-motivated, people-loving guy with a smooshy face and a tail nub that's hard not to smile at. He walks well on leash, is easy to handle, and while he can be a bit snatchy with treats, has made steady progress with treat manners over his time here.
He's gentle and calm with soft eyes and a loose, relaxed body, and he genuinely enjoys human company. In playgroup, he showed neutral social skills, appropriately correcting other dogs when he wanted space and showing discomfort with being mounted, though he occasionally attempted to mount others. On walks, he calmly passes other dogs without paying attention to them. With his soft eyes, smooshy face, and ever-wagging little nub, Benson is the kind of companion who quietly steals your attention and then your whole heart. Due to his length of stay, Benson is urgently seeking placement with a rescue partner, foster, or adopter.

Per staff 5/3:
Kennel Presentation: Laying down in his kennel, when I called to him in a baby voice he got up and came to the front. Soft eyes, ears back, loose body. Took a treat snatchy through the bars.
Leash Skills: Easy to leash, once leashed came right out. Walked on a loose leash keeping his eyes on my hands. Loose body, ears back, soft eyes, low tail.
Sociability: Very food motivated and very snatchy with treats so tossing them is best. Would come over when I called to him, soft eyes, ears back, loose body. Allowed all handling with ears back, loose body, low tail. Would walk away when I stopped petting.
Play: Tossed around a few toys, no interest.
Dog Interaction: Passed by a larger dog on the way out, walked by not paying any interest. Loose body, low tail.
Return to Kennel: Walked back on a loose leash, low tail, loose body, ears back. Went right into his kennel and leash was removed easily.
Color Level: Gold
Recommendations: Best suited for children 10+ due to being snatchy with treats.
Per staff 5/1, playgroup: Barely steerable (1/5 with spray bottle and shake can). Neutral, aloof at gate. Slightly handler-oriented. Mounting attempts toward Scrap Iron, steered off. Reattempted several times. Appropriately corrected Denzo for space. Slightly overcorrected Mister C for mounting attempt, mounting him right back with growls and a lip raise.
Per volunteer 4/27: What a cutie! Benson stood quietly and calmly in front of his kennel and walked under control as we exited. While on our walk, Benson pulled lightly and after showing my treats, he was by my side and did not pull at all. Benson took treats nicely but if I offered a second, he grabbed my finger; therefore I changed to a fist approach which worked great! Benson seemed very motivated by treats as he is a skinny boy. While leaving the run, Benson sniffed noses with another dog in the neighboring run. His body language was relaxed as he walked along the fence to sniff the other dog with mixed (from Benson) interest. Benson walked calmly back inside and entered his kennel on his own. He enjoyed a few more hot dog treats after an easy over the head leash removal. What a nice dog on first impression. His smooshy face is too cute.
Per volunteer 4/26: Benson wins best boo boo lip of the day. Super sweet, easy going boy. Some kind of bull-dogish mix? - tail nub included. Very treat motivated. Will literally follow you everywhere if he thinks you might drop a treat. A little snatchy but got better as he was able to focus. Walks well on the leash. Non reactive to passing dogs.
Per staff 4/28: Good, calm boy.
Per staff 4/26: Moderate issues returning to kennel.
Per police intake 4/25: Friendly.
