About gibby: Intake Info: Gibby arrived at the shelter on 4/30 after a concerned citizen reported that he had been abandoned outside their property wearing a rope tied in a noose around his neck. He was scanned for a microchip, but none was found. The finder described Gibby as a very sweet dog who got along well with their own dog and appeared eager to play. Medical: Gibby is neutered, vaccinated, and heartworm positive. He is not currently showing obvious symptoms related to heartworm disease, and no significant heart or lung abnormalities have been detected. He has mild dental tartar, mildly pale gums, and mild dermatitis on his rump. Staff report that Gibby is friendly and enjoys attention but becomes uncomfortable with restraint and medical procedures. On 5/22, he was noted to have a persistent cough after completing treatment for CIRD, which may be related to his prior respiratory illness or his heartworm infection. He is currently classified as HS-4. Behavior Observations: Gibby is an easy-to-walk dog who enjoys being outdoors, exploring, playing with toys, and interacting with other dogs. He readily accepts treats, allows handling, and appears much more relaxed outside of the kennel environment. While social with other dogs, Gibby can become overly aroused during interactions and has difficulty responding appropriately to canine corrections, which has resulted in an altercation with another dog. He has also displayed defensive behavior during a stressful medical handling event. As his shelter stay has lengthened, staff have observed increasing signs of fear, anxiety, and stress. Request to Rescues: Gibby is in need of a rescue partner that can provide the structure, behavior support, and decompression that are difficult to achieve within a busy municipal shelter environment. While he has many positive qualities'including being social, food-motivated, easy to walk, and generally affectionate with people'his prolonged shelter stay has contributed to increasing stress and behavioral challenges. Gibby would benefit from placement in a stable environment where he can receive continued behavior modification, careful dog introductions, and guidance to help him develop appropriate social skills. In addition to his behavioral needs, Gibby will require treatment for his heartworm disease. We are hopeful that with the right rescue placement, medical care, and training support, Gibby can successfully overcome these challenges and find the safe, loving home he deserves.
