Good Dog Meet (In Shelter)
Luna ACCT-A-241032 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to behavioral concerns in the shelter environment. Luna must have confirmed placement with a RESCUE PARTNER OR ADOPTER by TUESDAY, JUNE 23RD at 10:00 AM. Should Luna's medical or behavioral status change, her urgency and timeline for placement may also change.
Luna is a young dog with a big personality and an even bigger heart. This beautiful one-year-old girl is full of energy, affection, and enthusiasm for life. While shelter life has been a challenging adjustment, Luna continues to show staff and volunteers just how much she loves people. She is happiest when she can be close to her humans, soaking up attention, leaning in for pets, and showing off her sweet, affectionate side.
Luna is a vocal, expressive dog who isn't shy about sharing her thoughts. She can be excitable around other dogs and in busy environments, but she consistently shows strong interest in her handlers and enjoys interacting with people. She knows sit, takes treats gently, and has been described as sweet, soft, and eager for affection. Luna is looking for a home that can appreciate her energetic spirit while helping her continue to build confidence and learn.

Per volunteer 6/14: Luna is a vocal girl, barking at dogs on her walk out and outside. She is handler focused and sweet with me, sitting for treats and also pets. She is super soft and her stunning eyes will really shine once the wound on her nose heals fully. She is excited going in and out of her kennel, treat lures work.

Alert barked throughout. Not steerable with spray bottle or shake can (0/5). At gate: tail slightly tucked, eventual low- to mid-level wags. In yard, stayed by handler, barking. Didn't show any inclination to approach other dogs, and the two other dogs in the yard (Gingersnap and Zorro) didn't try to engage. Removed from yard shortly afterward.

Did you adopt this dog from ACCT Philly?
yes
What is your dog's name?
Luna
How long have you owned this dog?
About 4-5
What is the reason(s) for surrendering your dog? Please be as specific as possible.
I am making the difficult decision to return Luna because I do not feel I can provide the level of care and support she needs.
Since bringing her home, I have noticed that she struggles with separation anxiety and has behaviors that result in self-harm. I am concerned about her well-being, but I am not financially able to afford the training, behavioral support, and veterinary care that may be needed to address these issues properly.
Another challenge is that I have a cat who is my emotional support animal. While Luna has not been aggressive toward my cat, having Luna in the home has made it difficult for my cat to have access to the rest of the house. As a result, my cat has been confined to one room most of the time, which is not an ideal situation for either animal.
This decision is heartbreaking because I genuinely love dogs and wanted to give Luna a good home. One of the reasons I adopted her is because dogs provide a unique type of companionship and affection that I truly value. However, after careful consideration, I believe returning her is in her best interest so that she can be placed with a family that has the resources, experience, and environment needed to help her thrive.
I care deeply about Luna and want what is best for her. This decision has not been easy, but I believe it is the most responsible choice for both Luna and my household.

Super friendly/loves them!
How does your dog usually react towards children?
Super friendly/loves them!
How does your dog usually react towards other dogs?
Depends on the situation
How does your dog usually react towards cats?
Depends on the situation
If you indicated your dog is reactive or aggressive, please describe in more detail. What behaviors does your pet display? Under what circumstances do they become aggressive/reactive? (If your pet is never aggressive or reactive, please write N/A.)
Regarding reactivity and aggression, Luna is a very vocal dog. She frequently communicates through barking, especially when she is excited, wants attention, or is interested in something around her.
With people, her barking appears to be driven more by excitement and wanting attention rather than aggression. She often seems frustrated when she cannot approach people to be petted.
With other dogs, she may bark and occasionally lunge while on leash, which I would describe as reactive behavior. However, I have not personally witnessed her bite or attempt to bite another dog or person.
One example occurred when a neighbor's dog got loose and approached Luna. The dogs barked at each other and interacted, but Luna did not bite the other dog. The interaction did not escalate beyond barking.
Based on my experience with her, I would describe Luna as vocal and reactive, particularly when excited or overstimulated, but I have not observed aggressive behavior involving biting or attempts to bite.
How does your dog usually react towards wildlife such as deer, squirrels, or rabbits outside?
Wants to chase them - high prey drive
The next section will go over your dog's medical needs. Is your dog experiencing any of these common medical issues? Please check all that apply.
Other medical concern I will describe below
If you checked any medical issues above, please tell us when these symptoms began (your best guess is fine). If your pet is healthy, write N/A below.
Regarding Luna's medical condition, my main concern has been injuries related to her attempts to escape the crate when left alone. She has separation anxiety and has injured herself while trying to get out of the crate.
Currently, she has scabs on her nose and forehead that appear to be from rubbing or scraping against the crate during these escape attempts. I have not noticed any other medical issues, but I wanted to disclose these injuries so the shelter is aware of them and can evaluate her further if needed.
To the best of my knowledge, these wounds are related to her self-injurious behavior associated with separation anxiety rather than an underlying medical condition.
Has your dog ever received vaccinations?
Yes
Has your dog ever been to a veterinarian or clinic?
yes
If yes, please provide the date of the most recent vet visit (best guess is fine), and the name of the hospital/clinic. Otherwise write N/A.

No vomiting at all
Lastly, please answer a few questions in your own words to help us choose the right placement for your dog. If your dog could choose, what would their perfect home and family look like?
A perfect home for Luna would be with someone who is attentive, patient, and able to give her plenty of love and affection. She enjoys being close to her person and prefers having someone around for much of the day. Luna forms strong bonds with her owner and seems happiest when she can stay nearby.
Because of her separation anxiety, I believe she would do best in a home where someone is home often or where she would not need to be left alone for long periods of time.
I also think Luna may do best as the only pet in the home so she can receive the time, attention, and focus she deserves. She is a loving dog who thrives on companionship and would likely do very well with an owner who can provide consistency, structure, and plenty of interaction.
What is your FAVORITE thing about your dog? What makes them special?
My favorite thing about Luna is how loving and loyal she is. When she first came home, she was shy and needed time to adjust, but as she became more comfortable, she really bonded with our family.
I feel that Luna and I developed a special connection. Out of everyone in the household, she seemed to feel the safest with me and would often look to me for comfort and reassurance. I could tell that she trusted me, and I felt her love in return.
Luna loves being petted and spending time close to her person. One of the things I admire most about her is how gentle and careful she is with children. She has a sweet nature and enjoys being around the people she loves.
Although making this decision is very difficult, I will always appreciate the bond I shared with Luna and the affection she brought into our home.
