12-AUG-26 - Euthanasia - 08/12/26 13:33
**Final plea COB 8/19/26 Not foster or pawdition eligible**

Tamale is a 1 year old Pit Bull type mix with foldover ears that came to the shelter as a stray at the beginning of July. When out in the play yards he is happy to play with a toy on his own and eventually comes over for attention from his handler. He has been assessed as tolerant with other dogs as he can be playful but is easily overwhelmed by too much play and begins to exit search. Since he has been at the shelter, Tamale has had high levels of kennel stress in charging at and jumping on the gate when people or dogs pass their kennel. This behavior has increased to lunging and baring teeth at the gate. The shelter environment is too overstimulating for Tamale and he is in a constant state of stress in his kennel. He has been on behavioral medications but the behaviors persist. If there is no commitment by COB 8/19/26 humane euthanasia will be authorized.

When approached to leash, Tamale continued his reactivity and began lunging, snapping, hard staring, and barring teeth. He only calmed down when CR began unlocking the gate. He was jumping and lured down with the leash then easily leashed. All of the other dogs were locked inside and Tamale walked with a mild pull and focused on toys in every kennel he passed; pushing at the gates to try and grab them. After playgroup, Tamale was returned to the kennel by a volunteer with clip to slip as a precaution but gave no issues. Later in the early afternoon, Tamale settled down with a toy in his kennel. -CR

Tamale was very excited and jumping a lot as staff tried to leash but he was not mouthing at all. On the leash he would get bursts of energy and pull hard. Once in the yard he got the zoomies and ran back and forth for a while. Staff threw him toys and he would grab them and run, occasionally rolling around in the grass. When he dropped a toy he would just grab another and play with that one. Staff had no issues getting him back on the leash once he was tired out, and he walked with no pull. He picked a new toy and carried it back to his kennel where staff easily unleashed him. -RC

06-AUG-26 - Note - 08/06/26 Tamale will be given extra enrichment to help manage his kennel stress exhibited by lunging, jumping, and barking. -CR

01-AUG-26 - Interact - 07/30/26 10:01 Per Volunteer: Tamale was standing calmly at his kennel door, and he gently ate a treat. When I introduced the leash, he got a little jumpy, but was easily secured. He exited with a hard pull, and headed directly toward the outside door, ignoring the dog kenneled to the opposite of him. Tamale ran with a relaxed body and tail, stopping periodically to relieve himself. Once in the yard, he picked up a toy and ran hard on his own, throwing the toy in the air and catching it. When he took a break from running, he rolled on his back. I sat down on the bench and he came by for a quick sniff of my hand, then ran off to play again. While swapping out leashes, Tamale stood relaxed and allowed me to pet him on his back and flank area. He walked to his kennel with a toy in his mouth, and was easily returned and unleashed. When walking past his kennel with the other dogs, Tamale would bark and lunge at them. - CL

29-JUL-26 - Interact - 07/29/26 12:22 When staff approached from inside kennel Tamale was jumping on fence and lunging and barking to staff. after few minutes staff approached from outside kennel gate and Tamale was laying down inside. when he was called he eagerly got up and came to gate with a tail wag and excited body. Due to his excited jumps took a few times to leash him. but he would only jump up for a second then get down waiting to go. Tamale did seem to get frustrated when walten (neighbor dog) started barking at the fence at him. When Tamale excited the gate he ignored the other dogs and rushed to go to the outside play yard. In the yard Tamale excitedly jumped on staff a few times but was easily pushed off. Tamale followed staff down yard to find other toys. when Tamale found a toy he eagerly played with it rolling around and throwing it up to himself. he showed no interest in pets or treats from staff but did swap his toy out as he played with it. Tamale would follow staff with toy down the yards with no issue but not approaching staff directly. he didn't seem to have issue with staff walking near him when he was playing with his toy. When staff was leaving with tamale he followed to gate with no issue. He allowed staff to change his leash to exit with no issue but did not release the toy he had in his mouth. Tamale walked to his kennel with no issue and was a easy return. -AC
