The behaviors described today reflect the dog?s responses in an Animal Care Center environment and during assessment. A dog's behavior in an Animal Care Center may differ significantly from how they behave in a home. Stress, confinement, and unfamiliar surroundings can cause dogs to act out?or suppress behaviors that may emerge later. A dog's behavior may change based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences. He walked with a light pull on the leash to the catch pen. The runner easily clasped the collar around his neck. He entered the play yard timidly with a low body and ears back. A male boxer mix approached him, and he exchanged timid greetings with him. A female shepherd mix quickly approached him and he exchanged timid greetings with her. He began to relax as he roamed and explored the yard. He would approach the handlers to solicit affection and also use them as a shield from the other dogs. If he was standing near a handler and another dog would approach, he would begin to growl and snap at the dog. He began displaying guarding behavior of the handlers in the yard. When not near the handlers, he would exchange soft greetings with the other dogs in the yard. Axel is social with other dogs but due to an incident in his previous home and his behavior in the yard, he will be no other dogs required. BEHAVIORALLY OK FOR PUBLIC ADOPTION, NO DOGS (REQ), MEDIUM ENERGY
