Eval Comments: \"The behaviors described to day reflect the dog's responses in an Animal Care Center environment and during assessment. A
dog's behavior in an Animal Care Center may differ significantly from how they behave in a home. Stress, confinement, and unfamiliar surroundings can cause dogs to act out or suppress behaviors that may emerge later. A dog's behavior may change based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences.\" He was standing at the back of the kennel with concemed eyes. The runner knelt at the kennel gate and began to verbally coax him. He approached to the middle of the kennel, but he would not come any closer. When the runner opened the kennel gate, he retreated to the back of the kennel and began to growl. He defensively bit at the leash a few times, before the runner was able to loop leash him. Once on leash, he exited the kennel and walked to the play yard with a moderate pull. He was still waring a hamess that he came in with.
The runner touched his back to gauge his sensitivity and if removing the hamess was safe to do so. He became tense, gave side eye and then spun around the face to runner. The runner placed a collar around his neck, while he was distracted looking at the dogs in the yard. It took a few attempts as he would become very tense and give side eye. On the final attempt, the collar was clasped, but he spun around growling and tried to bite the runner's hand. The assessment was ended at this point forsafety, due to his handling sensitivity and willingness to bite. A handler inside the yard knelt down to distract him, while the runner attempted to get the collar unclasped. As the handler in the yard knelt and began to verbally reassure him, he lunged and tried to bite them through the fence. A handler had to hold the runner's loop leash through the chain link fence and keep him distracted, so the runner could safely get the collar unclasped and prevent him from biting them. Due to his handling sensitivity, he will be designated as rescue only.
