Description
Playgroup:
He walked to the play yard with no pull on the leash. He was ok being collared by the runner, but he required a go-slow approach. He entered the play yard with soft body language. He was approached by a female husky. He tolerated her sniffing him, but he did not return the greeting. He was then approached by a male shepherd and displayed the same tolerant behavior. He began to calmly roam the yard and explore. He was tolerant of dogs trailing him to sniff him. He remained calm and tolerant around the other dogs for the rest of his time in the yard. He would approach the handlers and seek affection. He is tolerant of the other dogs and displayed no play style at this time. He would likely do best with a calmer dog. Handling:
He was taken to the catch pen for the handling assessment after play group. He was given a moment to acclimate to his surroundings. The handler knelt and called to him. He approached with soft body language and began to lean against the handler, seeking affection. He allowed the handler to pet his head with no reaction. He allowed the handler to check his teeth with no reaction. He allowed the handler to check his ears with no reaction. When the handler would touch and lift his paws, he was tense, gave side eye and licked his lips. He does seek affection, but he does freeze at certain times and appears less comfortable when walking behind his rear end. He was returned to his kennel without issue. Resource guarding:
Due to behavior of resource guarding reported by the person that brought him to the care center, a resource guarding assessment was conducted. He was on leash, and the leash was secured to a fence as precaution. The handler placed a bowl of wet food mixed with kibble in front of him. He began to eat it, and the handler waited a few seconds for him to start enjoying the food. At this point, the handler used an assess-a-hand to conduct the resource guarding assessment. The handler began to move the hand closer to the bowl. When the hand was still about two feet away, he froze with his nose still in the bowl and began to watch the hand?s movements. He then continued eating. The handler was able to pet his head while he was eating. He froze and raised his eyes looking at the hand. The handler was able to place the hand on the edge of the bowl, and he froze, giving side eye. When the hand was placed into the bowl, to slide the bowl away, he growled and bit the hand. The assessment was ended at this point. Due to his resource guarding behavior displayed in the previous home and the behavior displayed during his assessment, he will be designated as rescue only. He will also require a known history of aggression disclosure form.
