_ The behaviors described today reflect the dog's responses in an Animal Care Center environment and during assessment. A dog's behavior in an Animal Care Center may differ significantly from howthey behave in a home. Stress, confinement, and unfamiliar surroundings can cause dogs to act out-or suppress behaviors that may emerge later. A dog's behaviormay change based on surroundings, traming, medical, socialization, and life expenences.
She is not leash trained and had to be carried to the catch pen. She growled at a male shepherd who came up playfully to greet her through the fence. She was frozen while avoiding eye contact as the collar was clasped around her neck. She would not walk on leash and had to be carried in the yard. She sat at the gate with a tucked tail and wide eyes. A calm male shepherd came up to her slowly. She growled and air snapped at him, waming him for space. The waming was respected, and he backed away. Ahandler kneeled next to her, rubbing her head. She relaxed slightly while extending her paw towards him. She continued sitting at the gate while watching the other dogs with a tense body and ears back. She growled at a male pit bull who came up to her slowly. She relaxed slightly, allowing a female shepherd to approach and sniff her body. As the shepherd lingered near her muzzle, she lightly growled but didn't snap at her. She did not explore nor interact with any other dogs. She is insecure and lacks socialization and confidence. The handler picked her up without a leash muzzle and carried her out of the yard and back to her kennel. She has a history of aggression towards a rabbit in the previous home.
