?The behaviors described today reflect the dog?s responses in an Animal Care Center environment and during assessment. A
dog's behavior in an Animal Care Center may differ significantly from how they behave in a home. Stress, confinement, and
unfamiliar surroundings can cause dogs to act out?or suppress behaviors that may emerge later. A dog's behavior may
change based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences.?
Leppy was barking defensively and appeared very concerned/tense as the runner approached. The runner lowered his
body/used gentle verbal coaxing and eventually Leppy approached warily. Using a slow approach the runner was able to
leash/remove Leppy without incident. Leppy was taken to the catch pen and was collared/leashed using a slow approach.
Leppy greeted the dogs at the barrier with a neutral demeanor and was allowed into the play yard. Leppy displayed a neutral
body, closed mouth, natural ear set, relaxed tail wag, and soft eyes. Leppy exchanged greetings nicely then moved on and
continued to explore. As he explored the yard Leppy continued to socialize nicely, appearing to prefer calm dogs. Leppy
spent a good portion exploring and socializing but did not participate in play. At time times he approached the handlers and
sniffed them from a distance. When the handler acknowledged Leppy he became tense and barked defensively. In one
instance he was persistent in barking at one handler until another handler corrected him. Leppy maintained his distance from
the handlers appearing wary of them for the majority of the play session. Leppy appeared to prefer to be amongst calm dogs
and displayed no play style. Leppy appeared wary of the handlers maintaining his distance from them and barking
defensively if they tried to engage him. Leppy could benefit from further socialization/confidence building/basic manners

Leppy was in the play yard prior to the assessment and was given time to decompress. Leppy displayed a tense body, low
tail, closed mouth, ears back, and a neutral gaze. Leppy approached the handler and sniffed their hand appearing wary. The
handler pet Leppy and he moved his head away and moved away from the handler. The handler used the leash to reel in
Leppy closer to them and allowed Leppy time to acclimate to their presence. After some time Leppy approached again and
allowed petting appearing more at ease with a relaxed demeanor and open mouth pant. The handler was able to examine
Leppy?s ears, mouth, abdomen, back, and tail. He appeared uncomfortable with his paws being touched, becoming tense.
The handler back tied him and proceeded with the assessment hand. They were able to examine Leppy?s lower extremities,
but he appeared tense and uncomfortable. Leppy appeared uncomfortable with his lower extremities being handled
appearing tense but did not escalate. Leppy was returned to his kennel without issue. Leppy could benefit from a slow and
patient introduction with further socialization and confidence building. Leppy is recommended to be made available to
rescue only at this time low energy level calm dogs required.
