ASSESSMENT
BALDWIN PARK

?The behaviors described today reflect the dog?s responses in an Animal Care Center environment and during assessment. A
dog's behavior in an Animal Care Center may differ significantly from how they behave in a home. Stress, confinement, and
unfamiliar surroundings can cause dogs to act out or suppress behaviors that may emerge later. A dog's behavior may change
based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences.?
Eli was barking and whining anxiously at the front of the kennel when the runner approached. His body was neutral, his
pupils were dilated, and he pawed the kennel door anxiously. He sat when the runner presented the leash. He was easy to
leash and remove from the kennel, pulled strongly on leash while whining softly, and was easy to collar. In the catch pen, his
body was neutral, his eyes were soft, and his tail was neutral. He entered the yard, and exchanged appropriate greetings with
the other dogs. He roamed the yard, keeping to himself as much as possible. He offered a deep growl when one of the dogs
mounted him, but both dogs were easily steered away from each other. He continued to roam the yard, eventually relaxing
and engaging in brief bouts of gentle play. He solicited petting from the handlers. Eli is tolerant of the other dogs, has a
medium energy level, and prefers a gentle-dainty playstyle.

Eli was already in the yard when the handler decided to begin the handling assessment. He was moved to the side yard, and
given a few moments to decompress before the handler entered the yard. He approached the handler with a relaxed body,
soft eyes, an open pant, and a neutral tail wag. He allowed the handler to pet his head, neck, and back with no issues. The
handler was able to check his ears and teeth. When the handler touched his abdomen, his body tensed, and he offered a deep
growl. The handler stopped petting him, and his body relaxed. The Assess-A-Hand was used to touch his tail and all four
paws. He pulled his feet away, and used one of his paws to gently push the Asses-A-Hand away. His body was slightly tense,
and his eyes were wide and concerned. When the assessment was over, he began looking for an exit while whining and
barking anxiously. He was returned to his kennel without incident.
