A5746357/ASH'S Behavior Assessments

PLAYGROUP
DOWNEY
A5746357
The behaviors described today reflect the dog?s responses in an Animal Care Center environment and during assessment. A
dog's behavior in an Animal Care Center may differ significantly from how they behave in a home. Stress, confinement, and
unfamiliar surroundings can cause dogs to act out?or suppress behaviors that may emerge later. A dog's behavior may
change based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences.
Ash A5746357 (Intact) was at the front of the kennel, alert-barking with a neutral body posture, when the runner arrived. He
was easily retrieved from his kennel and proceeded to walk ahead of the runner with a moderate pull on the leash, bypassing
his neighbors. Inside the catch pen, Ash became reactive toward the dogs at the barrier, emitting a deep growl while giving
them a hard stare and directing a side eye at the runner during leash placement. As a precaution, he was cautiously muzzled,
collared, and leashed prior to entering the yard. Once inside, Ash began to target the dogs by assertively mounting them with
a stiff body posture, requiring the handlers to correct him consistently. As he continued to display the same behavior, he
became less responsive to the corrections. The session concluded early due to his offensive behavior toward the dogs, as it
could potentially provoke a reaction from them. Ash was shifted to the side yard to begin his handling assessment. Ash may
benefit from impulse-control training. Based on the behavior observed during the assessment, Ash is currently unavailable
for public adoption.

Ash A5746357 (Intact) was allowed to decompress prior to the assessment. The handler was unable to safely conduct a full
evaluation as Ash remained alert and growled when his left hind leg was handled. As a safety measure, the handler used an
Assess-a-Hand tool to fully examine Ash, though his body exhibited a stiff body posture with wide eyes, a high, stiff tail, a
closed mouth, and ears slightly back. When the tool was removed, Ash?s body softened but reverted to a stiff posture when
the handler attempted a hands-on evaluation. Gentle coaxing and petting helped Ash to relax briefly, with a soft wagging tail,
but this improvement was short-lived as he reverted to a stiff posture and side-eyed the handler. The handler was unable to
safely proceed due to his unpredictable behavior, displaying missed signals throughout the session. Therefore, Ash is not
available for public adoption.
