HANDLING
BALDWIN PARK
A5747057
?The behaviors described today reflect the dog?s responses in an Animal Care Center environment and during assessment. A
dog's behavior in an Animal Care Center may differ significantly from how they behave in a home. Stress, confinement, and
unfamiliar surroundings can cause dogs to act out or suppress behaviors that may emerge later. A dog's behavior may change
based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences.?
Allen was fearful of the handler, and began looking for an exit with dilated pupils and a nervous demeanor. He paced back
and forth, and retreated to the back of the kennel when the handler moved forward. His body was tense, his eyes were
focused, and his mouth was open. He dodged the leash several times, and became increasingly agitated. The handler moved
away from the kennel for several minutes before returning to try again. Allen retreated the same behaviors, but the handler
stepped into the kennel. The handler moved slowly, and was able to place the leash halfway over his head. The handler was
able to adjust the leash as Allen exited the kennel. He was fearful of the environment, and tried to pull away from the
handler. The handler was able to walk him to a quiet area, where he remained tense and fearful. He kept the handler in his
line of sight at all times, and stared at the handler with concerned eyes. The handler back-tied him for safety, and used the
Assess-A-Hand for the assessment. He dodged the handler, barked, and tried to run away. He gently bit the Assess-A-Hand
when the handler persisted. The assessment was ended, and the handler released the back-tie. Allen began to panic, and tried
to run away, but the handler was able to hold onto the leash. The handler offered a firm verbal correction, and told Allen to
sit. Allen immediately settled, sat down, and watched the handler with soft eyes, ears back, and an open pant. He jumped on
the handler gently, and allowed the handler to pet his head and neck. He flinched away when the handler moved his hand,
but solicited additional petting once he recovered. He was easily returned to his kennel. **DUE TO DISPLAYING SOME
PRO-SOCIAL BEHAVIOR AT THE END OF THE ASSESSMENT, A SECOND HANDLING ASSESSMENT MAY BE
PERFORMED AFTER ALLEN HAS SOME MORE TIME TO DECOMPRESS.**
