?The behaviors described today reflect the dog?s responses in an Animal Care Center environment and during assessment. A
dog's behavior in an Animal Care Center may differ significantly from how they behave in a home. Stress, confinement, and
unfamiliar surroundings can cause dogs to act out or suppress behaviors that may emerge later. A dog's behavior may change
based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences.?
Edgar was fearful of the handler, and retreated to the back of the kennel with a tucked tail. He slowly approached to sniff the
handler when coaxed, but dodged the leash when the handler tried to leash him. He retreated to the back of the kennel again,
and began snapping at the leash. The handler continued speaking softly, and Edgar slowly laid down on his bed. The handler
stepped into the kennel, and was able to slowly drape the leash over his head. He exited the kennel with some coaxing, but
was fearful of the environment. He tried to pull away from the handler at first, but slowly followed the handler to a quiet
area. He was very distracted by the environment, and kept his focus away from the handler. His body was slightly tense, and
he jumped the first few times the handler touched him. He allowed the handler to pet his head, neck, back, and sides when
the handler moved slowly. He allowed the handler to check his ears, but pulled his head away when the handler tried to
check his teeth. On the second attempt, he allowed the handler to check his teeth. The handler was able to gently palpate his
abdomen, and touch his tail and back legs. He pulled his front feet away, but allowed the handler to touch his paws with
some insistence. He remained timid and jumpy, but seemed interested the handler when she stopped petting him. He was
easy to return to the kennel.
