?The behaviors described today reflect the dog?s responses in an Animal Care Center environment and during assessment. A
dog's behavior in an Animal Care Center may differ significantly from how they behave in a home. Stress, confinement, and
unfamiliar surroundings can cause dogs to act out or suppress behaviors that may emerge later. A dog's behavior may change
based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences.?
Blanca was sitting in the middle of the kennel with a tense body and a timid demeanor. She approached the front of the
kennel with some coaxing, and allowed the handler to pet her face through the kennel door. She retreated to the back of the
kennel when the handler presented the leash. Her body was lowered, and she trembled softly. The handler stepped into the
kennel, and was able to leash her after some coaxing. She did not want to exit the kennel, and required some gentle pressure
on the leash to step over the threshold. She was fearful of the environment, and required coaxing and pressure on the leash to
walk to a quiet area of the kennels. Her body was tense with a lowered posture, her eyes were wide and concerned, and her
tail was tucked. She allowed the handler to pet her whole body, but remained tense and uncomfortable throughout the
assessment. She panicked when the handler tried to walk her back to the kennel, and required coaxing and gentle pressure on
the leash to walk back to the kennel.
