?The behaviors described today reflect the dog?s responses in an Animal Care Center environment and during assessment. A
dog's behavior in an Animal Care Center may differ significantly from how they behave in a home. Stress, confinement, and
unfamiliar surroundings can cause dogs to act out or suppress behaviors that may emerge later. A dog's behavior may change
based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences.?
Aylah was lying on her bed with a tense, trembling body when the runner approached. Her eyes were wide, her mouth was
closed, her ears were back, and her tail was tucked. She bared her teeth, and tried to run to the other side of the kennel. The
runner closed the divider, and Aylah scurried to the back of the kennel. The runner stepped into the kennel to leash her, but
Aylah bit the leash a few times before the runner was able to leash her. She scurried out of the kennel, pulled moderately on
leash while bypassing the other kennels, and kept her eyes on the runner as she walked. She was very difficult to collar, and
bared her teeth, lunged, and snapped at the runner. The runner moved slowly, and was able to collar her after several
minutes. In the catch pen, her body was neutral, her eyes were neutral, and her tail was neutral. She entered the yard, and
bypassed the other dogs without greeting them. She moved to the corner of the yard, where she stayed for several minutes
while she observed the other dogs. She eventually moved away from the corner, and exchanged appropriate greetings with a
calm female. She briefly engaged in very soft play with another calm dog, but quickly moved to the opposite corner of the
yard where she sat until playgroup ended. Aylah is tolerant of the other dogs, has a low energy level, and prefers a
gentle-dainty playstyle.

Aylah was already in the yard when the handler decided to begin the handling assessment. She was avoidant of the handler,
but the handler was able to leash her and guide her to the side yard. She was given a few moments to decompress before the
handler entered the yard. She was wary of the handler, but eventually sniffed and licked the handler?s hand. The handler
moved slowly, and was able to pet her head, neck, back, and sides. She allowed the handler to check her ears and teeth with
no issues. She sat down when the handler touched her tail or back legs. When the handler tried to touch her front legs, she
bared her teeth and whipped her head toward the handler. She did not try to bite, but clearly did not want to have her legs
handled. She allowed the handler to continue petting her head, neck, and back after the assessment was completed.

Aylah was on the outside of the kennel when the runner approached from the inside. Aylah would not approach the runner, so
the runner closed the divider and walked to the other side of the kennel. Aylah retreated to the back of the kennel, and
pressed her body to the kennel wall. Her body was tense, her eyes were wide, her ears were back, and her tail was tucked.
She growled and bared her teeth when the runner tried to leash her. The runner stepped into the kennel, and gently tossed the
leash over her head. She exited the kennel, and immediately began to pull away from the runner. She flailed and bit the
leash, and then ran back into the kennel. She bared her teeth when the runner tried to remove the leash, so the leash hook
was used to safely remove the leash. She snapped defensively at the leash hook, but did not make contact with it. Aylah
could not be removed from the kennel at this time. A second attempt will be made at a later date with the use of a roll cart.
