BEHAVIOR
The behaviors described today reflect the dog's responses in an Animal Care Center environment and during assessment. A dog's behavior in an Animal Care Center may differ significantly from how they behave in a home. Stress, confinement, and unfamiliar surroundings can cause dogs to act out-or suppress behaviors that may emerge later. A dog's behavior may change based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences.
He was fearful of the loop leash but did not object to it being placed over his head. He would not walk on leash despite coaxing. He was easily carried to the catch pen without issue. He pancaked on the ground, tolerating the runner clasping the collar around his neck. He entered the yard and walked over to a corner of the yard, pressing his body against the wall with concerned eyes. A calm, female pit bull came up to greet him. Wolfer was tense but tolerated a brief greeting as he sat there. He was not comfortable with a male shepherd who came up playfully. Wolfer growled and snapped at the shepherd, warning him for space. Wolfer also exposed his teeth to a young, male Corso who came up to greet him quickly. He spent a long time sitting in the corner and showed no interest in engaging the other dogs. He was tolerant of calm dogs coming up to greet him but would growl or expose his teeth to any that approached quickly. Eventually he gained some confidence and came out to explore the yard. He approached a handler for some brief affection. He remained tolerant of the calm female pit bull coming up to him. As a pair of dogs began chasing around the yard, he became wary of their energy, walking over to another corner in the yard where a similarly unsocialized dog was sitting. Wolfer remained in the corner with the other dogs, sitting next to each other and pressing their bodies against each other as it appeared to reassure each of them. He lacks socialization and needs leash training.
BEHAVIORALLY OK FOR PUBLIC ADOPTION, ADULTS (REC), CALM DOGS (REQ), LOW ENERGY
He was tense but tolerated the handler sitting next to him while rubbing his head and back. He relaxed slightly with some light coaxing. The handler looked in his ears, viewed his teeth, held each of his paws and held his tail. He tolerated the contact but was not fully comfortable and did not display any negative behavior during the assessment. He is not leash trained and was resistant walking on leash. The handler easily carried him without a leash muzzle back to his kennel.
