The behaviors described today reflect the dog?s responses in an Animal Care Center environment and during assessment. A
dog's behavior in an Animal Care Center may differ significantly from how they behave in a home. Stress, confinement, and
unfamiliar surroundings can cause dogs to act out?or suppress behaviors that may emerge later. A dog's behavior may
change based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences.
Goopi barked lunged at the fence, but settled after a few seconds. He leaned against the kennel door, and allowed the runner
to pet him through the kennel. His body stiffened, and he began to bark at the runner again. After a few seconds, he relaxed
again, and greeted the runner with a wiggly body. He was easy to leash and remove from the kennel, and pulled moderately
on leash. He stopped several times to sniff the ground, and would not move until he was finished sniffing. He was easy to
collar. In the catch pen, his body was neutral, his eyes were soft, and his tail was neutral with a soft wag. He entered the
yard, and exchanged appropriate greetings with the other dogs. He roamed the yard with an open pant and a high tail wag.
When a confident male entered the yard, Goopi greeted him with a slightly tense body. He was easy to steer, and continued
to roam the yard for awhile before he mounted the confident male. They engaged in a minor scuffle, but were quickly steered
away from each other. Goopi began chasing and challenging the other dogs. While he remained easy to steer, he was
eventually removed from the yard to keeping him from overwhelming the other dogs. He was very difficult to place back
into his kennel, but the runner was able to safely return him to the kennel after a brief struggle. Goopi is selective with the
other dogs, has a medium energy level, and does not have a playstyle at this time.

Goopi A5768218 (Altered) was at the front of the kennel with a calm demeanor but became reactive when the runner?s hand
was presented at the barrier. Goopi lunged offensively in an attempt to bite, as he bared his teeth at the runner. He settled
after noticing the leash, allowing himself to be retrieved without incident. Once outside, he led the way to the yard with a
strong pull on the leash, where he was allowed to decompress prior to the assessment. Due to his kennel presentation, an
Assess-a-Hand tool was used to fully examine Goopi, and he appeared uncomfortable during the process without escalating.
The handler then proceeded to do a hands-on evaluation, managing to palpate Goopi?s ears, mouth, abdomen, tail, and legs
as he stood with a tense body posture, a concerned gaze, a closed mouth, ears slightly back, and a low tail. Once the session
concluded, Goopi performed a shake-off, which allowed his body to fully relax, and he began to seek interaction with the
handler, soliciting petting. Returning Goopi to his kennel became difficult, as he refused to enter on his own, requiring firm
leash guidance. Once inside, the handler remained at the front of the kennel to evaluate Goopi?s behavior, where he initially
pressed his body against the barrier to solicit back scratches but became reactive once the handler stopped. He once again
tracked the handler?s hand as he attempted to bite it. Based on his kennel presentation, Goopi could benefit from behavior
modification focused on barrier reactivity. Slow introductions are highly recommended, as this may allow him to gradually
warm up to people.
