About baloo: ***DEADLINE. MUST EXIT SHELTER BY WEDNESDAY 5/27 5PM*** Behavior Can you help Baloo?? Transferdas@rivco.org A1915252 Description: I am a male, 68.40 lbs, gray and white Pit Bull Terrier and American Bulldog. Age: The shelter staff think I am about 4 years old. More Info: I have been at the shelter since May 06, 2026. I am an at risk animal. Please contact the shelter for more information. STAFF OBSERVATIONS 05/06/26 Dog was barking when walking up. Offered the dog wet food and he started to wag his tail walking up in a non-aggressive way. Dog ate wet food, but when he smelled and saw the catch pole the dog immediately started to charge at me and bite. I was able to hit the catchpole on the ground at him, but the dog continued. After a few seconds the dog ran off under a car. Needed other officers to safely impound the dog. 05/14/26 Handlers approached kennel to pull dog for playgroup assessment. Dog was in the outside portion of the kennel and would not come in. Handlers dropped the divider and moved to the outside portion of the kennel where the dog began barking. Handler 1 got on their knees outside kennel and began talking to the dog. Dog became loose and wiggly and interacted with handler through kennel door. Handler cracked the kennel door and the dog began to retreat away from slip leash. Handler entered kennel with dog. Dog presented fearful and avoidant behaviors (lip licking, flinching, whale eyeing and moving away from leash) when leash was presented. Handler was able to gentle slip leash around dog's neck. Dog exited kennel and got about 10 feet from kennel before he started biting the leash and alligator rolling. Second handler stepped in to apply double leash technique in order to keep both handlers and dog safe. Dog continued to redirect at leashes. Second handler obtained a tug from one of the play yards in an attempt to redirect the dog from biting the leashes to the toy. Dog redirected toward tug at first but then began fighting the leash again just a few steps later. This pattern continued all the way to the play yard. Third handler stepped in to attempt to help leash dog, dog allowed engagement from third handler and then dog jumped and attempted to bite third handler. Third handler attempted one last time to collar the dog for playgroup but dog would not allow for collar to be placed and kept repeating the above mentioned behaviors. Handlers 1 and 2 walked dog back to kennel. Dog redirected up the leash at handler 1 on walk back to kennel. Handler 2 was able to get dog to grab the tug toy instead of the leash numerous times on walk back. Dog re-kenneled easily. 05/14/26 Dog did not participate in playgroup today. Runners were unable to collar dog for assessment due to bite risk (see staff behavior note from 5/14/26). Dog may need muzzle work in the future if time allows.
