A dog's behavior in an Animal Care Center may differ significantly from how they behave in a home. Stress, confinement, and unfamiliar surroundings can cause dogs to act out or suppress behaviors that may emerge later. A dog's behavior may change based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences." He required a go-slow approach when being collared by the runner in the catch pen. He entered the play yard with soft body language. He was approached by a male Rottweiler mix and exchanged a soft greeting with him. He then began to roam the yard and explore. He was tolerant of dogs trailing him to sniff him. He continued to roam the yard and exchange soft greetings with the other dogs. He remained calm and social for the rest of his time in the yard. There were dogs playing during his time in the yard, but he did not engage in or entice any play. He would not approach the handlers in the yard and would constantly create space from them. He is social with the other dogs, but he displayed no play style at this time. Due to a pror incident, he will be designated as no small dogs required and will need a known history of aggression disclosure fom. See handling assessment for rescue only stipulation. When it was time to leave the play yard, he would growl, defensively bark, and create distance from the handler, when they were trying to pick up his leash to exit him from the yard. At one point, his flight response was so high, trying to create distance from the handler, he attempted to jump the fence. After a short time, he was successfully removed from the yard anc into the catch pen. Once in the catch pen, the handler knelt and began to verbally coax him, but he did not approach. The handler slowly approached him and picked up his leash. He was wary and had concemed eyes. He allowed the handler to pet his head, check his ears and teeth, with a go-slow approach. When the handler attempted to touch his tail or back paws, he would spin around and attempt to bite. Due to his fearful nature with high flight response and his handling sensitivities, he will be designated as rescue only. He will also need socialization to walking on a leash.
