'The behaviors described today reflect the dog's responses in an Animal Care Center environment and during assessment. A
dog's behavior in an Animal Care Center may differ significantly from how they behave in a home. Stress, confinement, and
unfamiliar surroundings can cause dogs to act out or suppress behaviors that may emerge later. A dog's behavior may change
based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences.'
Axel was at the front of the kennel, but retreated when the runner approached. The divider was closed, and the runner
walked to the other side of the kennel. Axel remained at the back of the kennel with a tense body. He was easy to leash and
remove from the kennel, pulled slightly on leash, and was wary of being collared. However, he was easy to collar when the
runner moved slowly. In the catch pen, his body was neutral, his eyes were neutral, and his tail was neutral. He entered the
yard, and timidly greeted the other dogs. He roamed the yard with neutral body, and solicited petting from the handlers. He
kept to himself as much as possible, but was tolerant of the other dogs when they were in his space. He did not engage in
play with the other dogs, but was able to coexist with no issues. Axel is tolerant of the other dogs, has a low energy level,
and does not have a playstyle at this time.

Axel was already in the yard when the handler decided to begin the handling assessment. He was moved to the side yard, and
given a few moments to decompress before the handler entered the yard. He approached the handler to solicit petting, but
became uncomfortable as the assessment progressed. He stood by the handler with a slightly tense body, neutral gaze, closed
mouth, and a low tail. He licked his lips and side-eyed the handler nervously throughout the assessment, but did not growl or
try to bite. When the assessment was over, he moved away from the handler.
