Euthanasia Reason - Reason for euthanasia: Zeus has a documented history of unsafe handling and aggressive behavior dating back to 2022. At that time, Zeus was redeemed by his owner; however, staff documented that he was unsafe to handle, and medical staff were unable to perform a thorough examination due to his behavior and handling concerns. Zeus was owner surrendered yesterday, and his behavior has remained unchanged. The owner stated that Zeus is aggressive and that she is terrified of him. During the surrender process, the owner was unable to remove his harness due to safety concerns and had to place him directly into a kennel. ACT JH attempted to remove the harness but was unable to do so safely, and an ACD was ultimately required to remove it. Due to being severely matted, Zeus required sedation in order to be clipped down and groomed. The owner reported that groomers have refused to groom Zeus because of his aggressive behavior. Behavior observed at the shelter continues to be concerning. Zeus has been baring his teeth while in the kennel. During intake and removal from his kennel, staff exercised extreme caution as Zeus was highly aggressive, growling, and showing his teeth. An ACD was required to safely handle him. Additionally, per the owner, Zeus is difficult to groom and exhibits concerning behavior while on leash. The owner reported that he would emit a low growl toward members of the public who passed nearby. Based on Zeus's longstanding history of severe handling concerns, persistent aggression, inability to be safely handled by staff, and the significant public and staff safety risk he presents, humane euthanasia is being recommended.
