The behaviors described today reflect the dog's responses in an Animal Care Center environment and during assessment. A dog's behavior in an Animal Care Center may differ significantly from how they behave in a home. Stress, confinement, and unfamiliar surroundings can cause dogs to act out'or suppress behaviors that may emerge later. A dog's behavior may change based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences.
Lucy was pacing anxiously at the front of the kennel when the runner approached. She licked her lips nervously, but was easy to leash and remove from the kennel. She pulled slightly on leash while bypassing the other kennels, and was easy to collar. In the catch pen, her body was neutral, her eyes were soft, and her tail was neutral. She entered the yard, and
exchanged appropriate greetings with the other dogs. She engaged in play with the dogs, and solicited petting from the handlers. Lucy is social with the other dogs, has a medium energy level, and prefers a push/pull playstyle.

Lucy A5787598 (Intact) was lying down next to the kennel door when the handler arrived. She stood up and sniffed the handler's hand through the barrier. However, Lucy hesitated when the leash was presented, retreating from it. She returned to the front with some coaxing, allowing herself to be retrieved. Lucy made her way to the yard, pulling moderately on the leash while bypassing her neighboring kennels. She was allowed to decompress prior to the assessment. Lucy initially stood with a calm demeanor, allowing handling of her ears, mouth, abdomen, and tail, but became concerned after her legs were
handled. This caused her to switch to a submissive position, resting on her side as she tolerated handling of her paws. Her body exhibited a slightly tense posture, with a closed mouth, a low tail, ears back, and a soft, but concerned gaze. Once the session concluded, Lucy's posture softened, and she sought engagement with the handler, performing play bows. She was returned to her kennel without incident. Lucy could benefit from confidence-building training and slow introductions, as this may allow her to gradually become comfortable with people.
