'The behaviors described today reflect the dog's responses in an Animal Care Center environment and during assessment. A
dog's behavior in an Animal Care Center may differ significantly from how they behave in a home. Stress, confinement, and
unfamiliar surroundings can cause dogs to act out or suppress behaviors that may emerge later. A dog's behavior may change
based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences.'
Twyla was huddled in the front corner of the kennel when the handler approached. She growled softly, and ran to the back of
the kennel where she tried to hide behind the bed. The handler tried to coax her forward, but she continued to hide. The
handler stepped into the kennel, and was able to gently drop the leash loop over her head by moving slowly. She began to
panic and flail, but the handler was able to calm her. She snapped toward the handler's hand, and would not allow the
handler to pick her up. She was able to be coaxed out of the kennel, and walked nicely on leash. She was nervous in the
yard, but seemed more relaxed than she had been in the kennel. She allowed the handler to pet her whole body when the
handler moved slowly. Her body was slightly tense and her eyes were concerned, but she was easy to handle. She allowed
the handler to pick her up and carry her, but tensed nervously when another handler approached to pet her. She allowed the
handler to carry her back to the kennel.
