NEW ASSESSMENT
DOWNEY

The behaviors described today reflect the dog?s responses in an Animal Care Center environment and during assessment. A
dog's behavior in an Animal Care Center may differ significantly from how they behave in a home. Stress, confinement, and
unfamiliar surroundings can cause dogs to act out?or suppress behaviors that may emerge later. A dog's behavior may
change based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences.
Blue was at the front of the kennel displaying barrier reactivity upon the runner?s arrival. He growled and barked loudly in
response to the presence of the runner. He stood with a stiff body posture, maintaining a hard stare and closely observing the
runner. He threw air bites at the runner?s hand when presented at the barrier. When attempting to leash him, he paused
briefly while continuing to focus on the runner. Eventually, he became reactive again, forcing the runner to react quickly as
he jumped in an attempt to bite. He was unresponsive to verbal corrections. A second attempt was made, and the runner
proceeded carefully, but he moved his head away to avoid the leash. After various attempts, he was leashed and exited the
kennel on his own. Blue walked ahead of the runner with a moderate pull on the leash. Once in the catch pen, he stood with a
tense body posture, growling at one of the handlers near the fence. As a precaution, he was cautiously collared and muzzled.
After entering the yard, Blue exchanged greetings with a tense body posture. He had an intense interaction with one of the
dogs, with both hard staring and growling at each other. They were redirected to avoid escalation. He moved on to explore
the environment, keeping his distance from the rest of the dogs. Later, he approached when called and allowed himself to be
petted by one of the handlers. He continued roaming the yard, showing no interest in socializing with the other dogs. He was
guided away when one of the handlers tried to interact with him, but Blue responded with a low growl and a hard stare. For
the rest of the session, he managed to tolerate the other dogs as long as they kept away from him. Before being returned to
his kennel, he was shifted to the side yard to begin his handling assessment. An environment without other dogs may be
beneficial due to Blue?s defensive response and lack of socialization.

Blue was allowed to decompress alone in the yard before the assessment. He wore a muzzle the entire time as a precaution.
The handler was able to conduct a full evaluation without issue. He stood still, allowing the handler to palpate his ears,
mouth, stomach, tail, and legs. He exhibited a neutral body posture, with a neutral gaze, a low tail, a closed mouth, and a
natural ear set throughout the session. Once the session concluded, the handler continued to interact with Blue by petting
him on the head. He became aroused, standing to hug the handler forcefully from behind. The handler corrected him with a
verbal correction and then proceeded to return him to his kennel. Due to highly offensive behavior in the kennel, Blue is
considered rescue-adoption only with a KHOA for barrier reactivity.

1ST ATTEMPT

Blue was at the front of the kennel displaying barrier reactivity upon the runner?s arrival. He first charged and slammed his
body against the barrier. Then he stood with a stiff body posture, barking and growling as he hard stared and tracked the
runner?s hand movements. He attempted to bite the runner?s hand when it was presented at the barrier. The runner used a
verbal correction, but it caused Blue to become more reactive, barking and growling in response. Due to his offensive
behavior and unresponsiveness to corrections, Blue was unsafe to retrieve. Another attempt will be made on another
occasion.
