NEW ASSESSMENT
DOWNEY
A5718087
The behaviors described today reflect the dog?s responses in an Animal Care Center environment and during assessment. A
dog's behavior in an Animal Care Center may differ significantly from how they behave in a home. Stress, confinement, and
unfamiliar surroundings can cause dogs to act out?or suppress behaviors that may emerge later. A dog's behavior may
change based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences.
Zeus A5718087(Altered) was lying down on his bed when the runner arrived. With some coaxing, Zeus approached and
sniffed the runner?s hand at the barrier, exhibiting a neutral body posture. He was easily leashed and exited the kennel on his
own. Zeus proceeded to walk ahead of the runner with a strong pull on the leash as he passed by his neighbors. Inside the
catch pen, Zeus became reactive at the fence, uncontrollably barking back at the other dogs. As a precaution, he was
muzzled; however, one of the handlers held the leash firmly while the runner placed the collar, leash, and muzzle as Zues
constantly moved. Once inside the yard, Zeus ignored the dogs, as he was fully focused on removing the muzzle,
unresponsive to corrections given by the handlers. While he continued to wrestle with the muzzle, Zues was approached by
one of the dogs, causing him to become tense. Zues displayed offensive behavior, lunging forward but restricted by the
muzzle. Soon after they were separated, Zues repeated the same behavior again, forcing the handler to conclude the session
due to his offensive behavior. He was moved to the side yard alone, where he was allowed to decompress. Zeus could
benefit from alone time in the yard. A home with no other dogs is ideal due to his lack of socialization around other dogs .

Zeus A5718087(Altered) was allowed to decompress alone in the yard prior to the assessment. The handler was able to
conduct a full evaluation without incident. Zeus stood still while his ears, mouth, stomach, tail, and legs were handled. He
displayed a neutral body posture, a low, relaxed tail, a natural ear set, a neutral gaze, and an open-mouth pant. Once the
session concluded, he remained in the yard to begin his resource guarding assessment. Zeus showed no concerning behavior
throughout the session; however, a slow introduction is highly recommended to allow him to warm up to people.

RESOURCE GUARDING ASSESSMENT
DOWNEY

Zeus A5718087(Altered) was in the yard prior to the assessment. The handler began by setting down a toy on the grass,
allowing Zeus to explore it. He briefly sniffed the toy, ignoring it completely afterward. An Assess-a-Hand tool was used to
maneuver the toy that was in front of him, though Zeus remained still and uninterested. The handler then introduced a bowl
of food, placing it in front of Zeus. He sniffed it but did not attempt to eat from it. The handler slowly touched and moved
the bowl with the Assess-a-Hand, but Zeus remained calm and unbothered. The handler continued to maneuver the bowl, but
Zeus remained uninterested. Zeus displayed a neutral body posture, with an open-mouth pant, a neutral gaze, a low tail, and
a natural ear set. Once the session concluded, he was returned to his kennel without issue. Zeus displayed no concerning
behavior throughout the assessment; however, per the previous owner, Zeus has demonstrated resource guarding behavior in
the past. It is advised to monitor closely for this type of behavior, mainly when feeding. An experienced owner is highly
recommended.
