?The behaviors described today reflect the dog?s responses in an Animal Care Center environment and during assessment. A
dog's behavior in an Animal Care Center may differ significantly from how they behave in a home. Stress, confinement, and
unfamiliar surroundings can cause dogs to act out?or suppress behaviors that may emerge later. A dog's behavior may
change based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences.?
Vega greeted the runner with a neutral demeanor sniffing her hand and was easy to leash. Vega exited the kennel on his own
and walked beside the runner with no pull on the leash bypassing the dogs along the way. Once in the catch pen Vega was
easy to collar and leash. He became tense at the barrier and began fence fighting; he was placed in a muzzle and was guided
into the yard. Vega displayed a tense body, closed mouth, natural ear set, a neutral tail with no wag, and a neutral gaze. He
was tense as the dogs sniffed him, but he did not react instead he wrestled with his muzzle for a few moments. Once the
group dispersed Vega approached the handlers soliciting petting from them and leaning his head into their touch . Vega then
moved on and began to explore, he would become tense when interacting with other dogs. If the dogs would pester him or
would try and coax play Vega would give a growl, then move away on his own. Vega would continue to tense up with further
interactions and one dog challenged him and started a scuffle. They were easy to separate but Vega remained tense when
interacting with other dogs and also began to challenge. He was shifted to the adjacent yard for alone time and appeared
much more at ease. He explored the yard and maintained a calm relaxed demeanor when on his own or around the handlers.
Vega appeared uncomfortable around other dogs preferring to keep to himself or be around the handlers . See additional
assessments for placement recommendations.

Vega was in the play yard wearing his muzzle prior to the assessment and was given time to decompress. Vega displayed a
relaxed body, open mouth pant, natural ear set, loose tail wag, and soft eyes. Vega allowed the handler to pet him, and he
solicited further petting. Vega allowed the handler to examine his ears, mouth, abdomen, back, tail, and front paws. When
the handler palpated Vegas? hind paw he whipped around and lunged up at the handler?s face. The handler was holding onto
Vega?s collar as a precaution and was able to keep Vega at bay. Vega remained tense and growled for a few moments before
settling down. He was leashed and returned to his kennel without incident. Vega is recommended to be made available to
Rescue only (+KHOA handling sensitivity hind limbs) medium energy level no other dogs recommended
