The behaviors described today reflect the dog?s responses in an Animal Care Center environment and during assessment. A dog's behavior in an Animal Care Center may differ significantly from how they behave in a home. Stress, confinement, and unfamiliar surroundings can cause dogs to act out?or suppress behaviors that may emerge later. A dog's behavior may change based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences.?

He walked with a light pull on the leash to the catch pen. The runner slowly approached him to place the collar on him. He spent a few minutes building his trust before placing the collar on. He entered the play yard timidly. When the fence closed he flinched at the noise. He was approached by a male lab and exchanged soft greetings with him. He was then approached by a female shepherd and exchanged soft greetings with her. He roamed the yard with the other dogs. He paced the play yard trying to look for an exit. He would not approach the handlers in the yard and would create space from them if they tried to approach him. He is tolerant of other dogs coming up to sniff him. He is tolerant of other dogs. After play group he was taken into the catch pen for a handling assessment. He was given a few moments to acclimate to his surroundings. The handler slowly approached him. The handler spent a few minutes building trust with him. He flinched when the handler went to pet his head. He started to relax and let the handler pet him. When the handler checked his teeth, he turned his head away. He allowed the handler to check his ears with no reaction. When the handler touched his tail, he spun around and backed away from the handler. When the handler tried to lift his front paw, he heavily pressed down and resisted letting it be picked up. When the handler lift ed his back paw, he pulled it away. He needs a go slow approach and needs to build trust with the person.
