ASSESSMENT
BALDWIN PARK
A5733186
?The behaviors described today reflect the dog?s responses in an Animal Care Center environment and during assessment. A
dog's behavior in an Animal Care Center may differ significantly from how they behave in a home. Stress, confinement, and
unfamiliar surroundings can cause dogs to act out or suppress behaviors that may emerge later. A dog's behavior may change
based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences.?
Maximus greeted the runner with a relaxed body, soft eyes, and a neutral tail with a loose wag. He was easy to leash and
remove from the kennel, and began jumping on the runner excitedly. The runner was able to correct him with no issues, and
walked him on a short leash with firm handling to keeping him from jumping up again. He was easy to collar. In the catch
pen, his body was tense, his eyes were focused, and his tail was stiff. He bared his teeth, and muzzle punched the gate
several times while barking and growling at the other dogs. He was muzzled prior to entering the yard for the safety of the
other dogs. He entered the yard with a tense body, and hovered over the other dogs in a challenging manner. He lunged and
tried to fight with a few dogs, and required a lot of steering from the handlers before he was able to interact with the other
dogs appropriately. He eventually relaxed around the other dogs, and began soliciting petting from the handlers. After a
while, the handlers removed the muzzle and allowed him to freely interact with the other dogs. He exchanged appropriate
greetings, but continued to hover over the other dogs with a slightly tense body. He was easy to steer with a verbal
correction. He briefly tried to play with the other dogs before attempting to mount them. He remained easy to steer with a
verbal correction. Maximus is tolerant of the other dogs, has a high energy level, and does not have a playstyle at this time.

Maximus was already in the yard when the handler decided to begin the handling assessment. He was moved to the side
yard, and given a few moments to decompress before the handler entered the yard. He jumped on the handler roughly with
an excited demeanor. He was easy to correct, and sat down when the handler asked him to do so. His body was relaxed, his
eyes were soft, and his mouth was open with a soft pant. He allowed the handler to pet him all over with no issues, and
remained easy to handle. He appears to know a few basic commands (sit, paw, other paw). He jumped on the handler again,
but was much gentler than before. He stood with his paws on the handler?s shoulders as she scratched his face and neck. His
eyes were soft, and his mouth was open with his tongue out. Maximus remained easy to handle throughout the assessment,
and did not display any concerning behavior while being handled. When the assessment was over, he was returned to his
kennel with no issues.
