Nala came into the care center as an owner surrender due to killing a cat. The previous owner found Nala with their black kitten in her mouth deceased. No attack was observed.
The behaviors described today reflect the dog's responses in an Animal Care Center environment and during assessment. A dog's behavior in an Animal Care Center may differ significantly from how they behave in a home. Stress, confinement, and unfamiliar surroundings can cause dogs to act out-or suppress behaviors that may emerge later. A dog's behavior may change based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences.

She had a light body tremble with ears back as the runner clasped the collar around her neck without issue. She was hesitant entering the play yard, requiring lots of coaxing to enter. Once in the yard, she hugged the perimeter fence with a tucked tail and concerned eyes while trying to avoid the other dogs. She appeared insecure and turned her head away as a calm female Doberman came up to greet her. She tolerated the Doberman sniffing her body but was not comfortable with her lingering near her face. She gave the Doberman a lip curl and lightly growled while slowly scooting away. She appeared to be insecure and under socialized. She then ran over to a handler, sitting behind his legs to use him as a barrier from the other dogs. She continued to sit behind the handler for a long time. She began to relax as time passed, tolerating calm dogs coming up to greet her. She did tolerate brief nose-to-nose interactions but if the other dog lingered too long, she would lip curl while leaning away. She continued to relax and gain confidence. She eventually walked away and began to roam the yard slowly. She was much more tolerant of calm dogs coming up to greet her and linger near her face. She was not comfortable with playful dogs or any dog who came up to quickly and would immediately lip curl and growl while leaning away. She is very under socialized and needs confidence building.
