Chenko is a behaviorally sensitive, rescue-only dog requiring an experienced placement. He displays barrier reactivity, selective dog tolerance, and handling sensitivity. During kennel and yard handling, he has shown tense body language, lunging, snapping without contact, and shutdown behaviors when touched. He prefers to maintain distance from handlers and is selective with other dogs; no playstyle has been observed at this time.
Additional notes: Previous owners reported that Chenko nipped her 7-year-old daughter on the lower lip without breaking skin. They also stated that he is triggered by unfamiliar people or hyperactive children.
Due to his handling and behavioral sensitivities, Chenko requires a rescue or adoptive placement experienced with reactive dogs, with a Bite Disclosure form

ASSESSMENT
DOWNEY
A5643903
?The behaviors described today reflect the dog?s responses in an Animal Care Center environment and during assessment. A
dog's behavior in an Animal Care Center may differ significantly from how they behave in a home. Stress, confinement, and
unfamiliar surroundings can cause dogs to act out?or suppress behaviors that may emerge later. A dog's behavior may
change based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences.?
Chenko A5643903 noticed the runner, he began to jump, lunge, he bit the barrier, hi body was tense, his eyes were focused,
his pupils were dilated, and his nub was high and stiff. The handler strongly verbally corrected him, he retreated to the back
of the kennel. The runner was able to leash him, he strongly pulled on leash, and he was reactive to the dogs who barked at
him as he passed through the kennels. In the catch pen when he was introduced to the dogs his body was neutral, his eyes
were alert, his mouth was closed, and his tail was slightly high with no wag. He was easy to collar of the leash. He entered
the yard and began exploring. He was slightly tense during the greetings. He walked away on his own. He roamed the yard
quietly and slowly. He tensed up a few times with one of the pushy male dogs who hovered around him. He was barrier
reactive to new dogs in the catch pen, the handler had to use the spray bottle to correct him. He walked away with verbal
corrections. He kept distance from the handlers. Overall, Chenko was selective of the dogs and does not have a playstyle at
this time.

Chenko A5643903 was moved to the side yard to proceed with his handling assessment. He was wary of the handler, his
body was slightly tense, he side eyed the handler, his tail was low with no wag, his mouth was closed and his ears were
slightly back. The handler used the leash to move him closer to her. When the handler got close to his head, he slightly
curled his lips. The handler used the assessment hand to pet him. As soon as she pet his head, he snapped towards the hand,
he lunged but did not make contact with the assessment hand (handler moved hand away). The handler reached over to pet
him again after a few seconds, he allowed her to pet him, but he completely shut down, he laid down on the ground and side
eyed her the entire time. Due to handling sensitivity Chenko will be Tier B: Rescue or AP only with a Dog Bite Disclosure
form.

Upon seeing the runner Chenko charged the barrier baring his teeth/barking at the runner. Chenko displayed a tense body,
ears back, closed mouth with teeth bared, and a hard focused stare. Chenko continued to lunge and bite through the barrier
and wouldn?t settle with verbal coaxing. The runner attempted to shift Chenko to the inside, but the divider is broken. He
was coaxed to the quite section but remained offensive/defensive at the barrier. The runner attempted to leash Chenko but he
bit the leash on several occasions. Chenko could not be safely removed from the kennel for an assessment. Chenko will be
attempted again at a later date.
