ASSESSMENT
BALDWIN PARK

?The behaviors described today reflect the dog?s responses in an Animal Care Center environment and during assessment. A
dog's behavior in an Animal Care Center may differ significantly from how they behave in a home. Stress, confinement, and
unfamiliar surroundings can cause dogs to act out or suppress behaviors that may emerge later. A dog's behavior may change
based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences.?
Merlin was standing in the middle of the kennel with a tense body, but approached the front when the runner called him. He
urinated on himself when the runner presented the leash. The runner put the leash away, and Merlin greeted him with a
neutral body, closed mouth, ears back, and soft eyes. The runner stepped into the kennel, and was able to leash him with no
issues. He walked nicely on leash while bypassing the other kennels, and was easy to collar while allowing the runner to pet
him. In the catch pen, he hid behind the runner with a tense body and a timid demeanor. He entered the yard, and greeted the
other dogs in a timid manner. He roamed the yard, keeping to himself as much as possible while maintaining a quiet and
timid demeanor. Merlin is tolerant of the other dogs, has a low energy level, and does not have a playstyle at this time.

Merlin was already in the yard when the handler decided to begin the handling assessment. He was moved to the side yard,
and given a few moments to decompress before the handler entered the yard. He did not approach the handler, but allowed
the handler to gently restrain him with the leash during the assessment. The handler moved slowly to avoid overwhelming
him, but he allowed the handler to pet his head, neck, back, and sides with no issues. When the handler touched his
abdomen, he closed his mouth, and licked his lips. The handler was able to check his ears and teeth with ease. He was
uncomfortable with having his paws touched, and turned to stare at the handler with wide eyes while licking his lips. The
handler moved slowly, and was able to touch all four paws with no issues. When the assessment was over, he stayed near the
handler and allowed the handler to continue petting him.
